Poplar Street, Petersburg disposal about having trash from about ev- ery state in America. I'm glad she likes me or it could turn out bad for me. I'll proba- bly have some from New Jersey this week so I'll get her to laughing at that so maybe her day will be a little brighter. Speaking of the trash bin area I wonder why the exit gate is not being used as an exit because it would certainly be easier not having to use the one gate as entry and exit. Doesn't look like that would be such a hard decision un- less I'm overlooking something. Sunday morning our scripture lesson was covering John 14 where the apostles were concerned about the possibility of Je- sus leaving them. These men had become much more than friends. They were family and now the main part of the family was to be taken from them. Jesus told them they shouldn't worry because He was going to prepare them a place and that He would come back for them. As hard as it is to lose someone it is on- ly temporary because there will be one big reunion each time one of us make it to Glo- ry. Jesus did tell them that He is the only way to the Father and that they will know The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas I am often appalled by the people who gam- ble and the many who commit suicide in the casino parking lots. The disease or sin of gam- bling is spreading, as more outlets for this evil are available. It is an evil that often preys on the weak and less knowledgeable people in our society. Those who want something for nothing and have low income and live on wel- fare are the ones who keep the lottery and vid- eo poker games going. Casino gambling with its lavish hotels often attracts people from a higher income. It is sad to see our teens involved and infect- ed with the adult gambling fever. One forth of teens, according to a Gallup survey, have participated in some type of gambling in the past year. One teen in ten reports that gam- bling has caused problems within their family. One teen in four reported having played a vid- eo poker machine in the past year and bet on professional sports. For example, 57 percent of adults bought a state lottery ticket during the past year. Reports are now coming in that schools receive little money from the State lot- teries. Gambling is wrong whether it be the State lottery, video poker, dog fights, sports events or the mafia controlled casinos. The sad results of gambling include bro- ken families, person- al financial loss and often a personality change. Those infect- ed with gambling fe- ver often become abu- sive to their spouse and children. The ad- diction becomes like that of alcoholism or drugs. It robs people of their self-discipline and eventually their self-respect. Only a few get the ill-gotten gain and others are driven to poverty. Teens join gangs, do break-ins and rob people to get money to gamble. Peo- ple both young and old cheat and steal or do whatever is necessary to support their habit of gambling. It is tragic that more and more states have become involved in this evil and in a sense legalized a sickness. Many states are now spending millions for hospital rooms and programs to house their victims. Our church- es should be leaders in opposing this evil. Each year at Christmastime, the "baby Je- sus" is the subject of discussion and attention. Indeed, all year long the Babe in its mother's arms and the dying Sufferer on the cross are kept constantly before the masses, while our Lord's resurrection, ascension and present glory in heaven are given but scant attention. This is because so few have taken note of the great message of the Apostle Paul about the glorified Lord in heaven. In II Cor. 5:16, the Apostle wrote: "…yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more." It is sad that so many still know only "Christ after the flesh." They love to discuss the "gos- pel stories" about the "Man of Galilee," but find themselves strangers in the great Epis- tles of St. Paul. Paul was the apostle for this present "dis- pensation of the grace of God." It is he who presents Christ in His present glory as the great Dispenser of redeeming grace, through the merits He won at Calvary. In Eph. 1:15 -23 we have recorded for us the Apostle's prayer that we might be given "the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ" that we might come to experience… "What is the exceeding greatness of [God's] power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, "Which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places. "Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world [age], but also in that which is to come" (Eph. 1:19 -21). Let us thank God that the baby Jesus died for our sins and became the risen, living Sav- ior at God's right hand, abundantly "able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him" (Heb. 7:25). Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas I hope no one was disappointed with no caroling last Saturday night but with my tak- ing sick with a fever my wife took our carol- ing music out to meet any singers and they were smart enough not to brave that wind and chill in the air. We will try again next Saturday evening and maybe the weather will be a lot more cooperative. When plan- ning anything the weather seems to always want to play a hand so you don't always win with your planning. A friend of mine wanted me to thank all the law enforcement officers for their efforts at keeping impaired drivers off the road. It does seem as though there aren't near as many accidents nor court news about im- paired driving as there used to be. Could be that there are more designated drivers and people using more common sense with their partying. I used to party hard and I was just fortu- nate that I never caused an accident and I know now that I was being watched over by the Lord. With the party season coming up shortly please remember to have the desig- nated driver ready or drink responsible. My- self it was better to just quit drinking before something terrible did happen.
