The event is designed to help citizens understand the mechanics of planning and zoning. "Pike County Farm Bu- reau, Inc. wants our mem- bers and local citizens to be informed before it becomes a local issue. We've all heard a lot of things, but we want to know the facts," said Judy Gumbel of the Pike County Farm Bureau. Guest speaker is K.K. Gerhart-Fritz, who is a Fel- low of the American In- stitute of Certified Plan- ners and a graduate of Ball State's College of Architec- ture and Planning. She has been a public-sector plan- ner in both a small town and a large city. She has worked on 20 different comprehen- sive plans that have all been adopted. She has long advo- cated the teaching and dis- cussion of ethics in planning. The session is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tues- day, Nov. 21 at the 4-H Build- ing in Hornady Park. Lunch will be provided by Indiana Farm Bureau. Reservations are required and the deadline is Friday, Nov. 17. They can be made by calling 812-354-8488 and speaking to Jane at ext. 3548 or Denise at ext. 3930. is still on the board and who is interested," said Council- man Dick Brewster. He sug- gested they could then fill the openings. Brewster said the town is interested in extend- ing zoning beyond the cor- porate limits to include the former Health Center building on the north edge of town. "When we do, that we should take it all the way to the top of the hill," said Brewster. He emphasized it was zon- ing not annexation. He said the town provides city water, sewer, fire and police protec- tion to that area. Tony Russell, who serves on the park board, asked councilmen about the de- cision to move the town's tree debris pile from be- side the Community Cen- ter to an area near the Mud Boggs track. Russell said that ground is controlled by the park board. "We are the ones who should be making that decision," said Russell. Greg Simmons said the pile was neglected and al- lowed to build for nearly 15 years beside the gym. He said the councilmen voted recently to move the pile to the Mud Boggs area to get it out of sight and away from the Community Center. "What if we as a park board make a decision you shouldn't' dump it down there anymore? " asked Rus- sell. "Basically that is town property. . . It is back there not bothering anyone," said Council president Terry Strobel. "What about the notion of the town coming up with a place for it to be put on town property? " asked Russell. "We can think about that, but for now it is going to be there," said Strobel. "It ultimately falls on us. If something happens and someone gets sued, they will sue us," said Simmons. Councilman Brewster said "When we created that park bard, they have full au- thority to operate that park and the Riverside Park. We don't have too much to say about it," said Brewster. "For now, it stays down there," said Strobel. "It was to benefit every- one to get it out of here," said Simmons. Eventually Strobel said they will look for another lo- cation, but the pile would re- main until they could come up with a suitable alterna- tive. Fire Chief Jason Bottoms said the fire department was more than willing to help by overseeing the pile being burned up to several times a year. He also said he thought the park agreement with the fire department allowed them to have two events a year at the park. "That agreement is out of date," said Dee Fiscus, who is on the park board. In other business, the council appointed Jeff Bo- lin to the Indiana Region 15 Board. They also agreed to fund training sessions in first responder classes for $120 each. They voted 3-0 to pay the claims totaling $28,462.92. The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, December 11 at the Winslow Community Center. Bruce injured in Monday crash An Oakland City woman was injured Monday morning near Arthur, when she slammed into the back of slowing semi-truck on Highway 64. Pike County Deputy Sheriff Brad Jenkins said Sara Bruce, 29, of Gibson St., Oakland City, was driv- ing west on Highway 64 and didn't see the semi-truck driven by Darrell Campbell, 56, of Birdseye, slow- ing in front of her and hit it in the back end. It happened at about 11:15 a.m. Bruce was taken by Pike County EMS to the hospital. She was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer. ZONING Continued from page 1
