It takes 3 mInutes to subscrIbe to 812-354-8500 VFW naval gun refurbished by scouts `An inquiry by Petersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars senior vice-commander Chris Kinman resulted in a community service project for Boy Scouts Troop 151, according to scout master Chuck Froehle. Tues- day's chilly air was good enough for the team to coat the three-inch naval gun with primer for now, with the final blue-gray paint to go on the next warm day. Froehle said that Troop 151, sponsored by the First United Methodist Church, paid for the first half gallon of paint and then Petersburg Hardware paid for the other half gallon. Painters included Cameron Smith, Samuel Haycraft, Amy Smith, Misty Garland and Chuck Froehle. The gun originally belonged to the Princeton VFW but they closed and sold the building to Michelle Hughen. The gun was bought and brought to the Petersburg VFW Post several years ago by Mike Western, Joe Cummings, Donnie Weis- man and James Capozella. Western lifted and transported the gun, and Cummings made the concrete foundation. New phone scam hitting Pike County area A new spam phone call is hitting around the Pike County area. Holly Bryan, Pike County's Emer- gency Management director, said ar- ea residents are getting calls telling them someone is going to come to their home to do damage assessment. With- out an explanation, they then try to ar- range an appointment to come to the person's residence. She urged people to not make an appointment and not to give anyone personal information in person or over the phone. Pike County Chief Deputy Sheriff Kent Johnson said he isn't sure if any- one in Pike County has received the call but knows people in the area have received them. Johnson said the IRS or computer repair or any other business will not be calling people to do damage assess- ment or computer repair. Johnson said if you haven't called someone or don't know the person you are speaking to, you shouldn't give out any information, especially credit card or banking information. State Rep. Mike Braun resigning Nov. 1 By Andy Heuring Parts of Pike County will be get- ting a new State Representative at the end of this month. State Representa- tive Mike Braun (R), Jasper, has an- nounced he is resigning effective No- vember 1 to focus more time on his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Braun was elected in November 2013 to the District 63 seat, which includes Petersburg, Jefferson and Washing- ton Township precincts. Indiana Re- publican State Chairman Kyle Hupfer has scheduled a caucus of the precinct committeemen in District 63 for 6 p.m. Monday, October 30 in the Pfeffenwei- ler Room of Jasper's City Hall, located at 610 Main St. Jasper. The person chosen will serve the re- mainder of Braun's term, which runs through December of 2018. The Dis- trict 63 seat will be on the ballot in No- vember 2018. The filing period for the 2018 election is January 2018. However, anyone interested in running in the October 30 caucus should contact the State Party Secretary at the email address of secretary@indiana.gop to en- sure they file the proper forms prior to the deadline. A news release from the Indi- ana GOP states the deadline for register- ing is 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, October 27. Mike Braun announced earlier this year he intended to seek election to Indi- ana's seat in the U.S. Senate that will be on the ballot in 2018. It is currently held by Democrat Joe Donnelly, of South Bend. He told area media on Monday he had hoped to complete his term, but as he got into the campaign, he saw he couldn't do justice to his constituents and his campaign.
