Poplar Street, Petersburg SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday, July 14, 1942 L. V. Colvin, city clerk- treasurer was removed to the Daviess County Hospi- tal at Washington for treat- ment. It is hoped by every- one in this city that Mr. Col- vin may show marked im- provement, having been a very sick man for the past few weeks. There will be a Recruit- ing Officer from the Naval Recruiting Office on the Main Street of this city Sat- urday afternoon and night. They will have literature for distribution and will be glad to give any desired informa- tion concerning their branch of the service. John Vinyard, one of the widest known and highly re- spected citizens of Winslow, died while waiting in the of- fice of Dr. DeTar, of Winslow, about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. He had been suffering from rheumatism for the past few months and stopped in the office for some medicine. He told the doctor what he came for and Doctor DeTar stepped into an adjoining room to prepare the same for Mr. Vineyard. When the doctor returned to the wait- ing room, he found Vineyard dead. People of Petersburg were shocked and grieved Tues- day afternoon late when word came to this city that Ronald, 10 -year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Coom- er, living in the east part of this city, had died from inju- ries received at 3:30 o'clock when he fell from the top of a moving truck, on Indiana state highway 61, five miles east of Vincennes, just west of the Opell Turkey Farm. Marriages: Announce- ment was made this week of the marriage of Mrs. Be- atrice Roberson to Everett Wood, of Evansville at the Baptist parsonage in Evans- ville, July 6. Deaths: Edwin Hensley, driver of a State Highway truck for the past ten years, and the father of seven chil- dren, was instantly killed in a truck crash just west of Ca- to, on Highway 56, Thursday morning about 9:30. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday, July 12, 1957 Contestants in the Big- gest Little Show on Earth fi- nal entertainment feature of the Pike County fair, were listed this week by sponsors of the annual affair which at- tracts interest over a wide ar- ea. Liberal prizes this year resulted in a large num- ber of entries, according to Ferd Veeck who sponsors the show with Mrs. Malotte. The show will be staged Sat- urday night, 8 p.m., July 20. Lucky Mott, world fa- mous endurance driver and a specialist behind the wheel while blindfolded, will thrill Petersburg Dollar Days crowds beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Monday under sponsorship of the Re- tail Merchants Association. City plans for a $ 300,000 sewer system improvement were given a big boost this week by three major devel- opments and Mayor L. Carol Thomas ventured the hope that actual construction of the proposed improvement will start at summer's end this year. Terry Hudson, Indianapo- lis, formerly of Petersburg, left for Louisville, for induc- tion into the armed services, Tuesday, July 9. Purchase of City Clean- ers by John Gilliand was an- nounced last week by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Warner, for- mer owners of the Peters- burg establishment. Marriages: Miss Mar- tha Sue Braun, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Braun became the bride of Donald McCaslin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McCaslin Sat- urday morning at 10 a.m., at the Otwell Methodist church, with the Rev. Claude Hayes performing the cere- mony. Births: Mr. and Mrs. T. O. O'Rourke are the proud parents of a son, Robert Lynn; A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Norrington, Winslow, July 9. Deaths: Funeral servic- es for Andrew Brett Ross, 57, were at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 5. Mr. Ross died at 2:30 p.m. July 3, at his home. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, July 27, 1967 An accident involving three cars occurred Satur- day evening at 6:30 o'clock on the corner of Ninth and McCoy streets, in Peters- burg. Ronnie Robling, 28, 613 South 10th Street, Pe- tersburg, driving a 1965 Chevrolet convertible was crossing Ninth street when Bart McCandless, 17, of Sullivan traveling south on Ninth street applied his brakes and skidded on the wet pavement striking the parked 1962 Pontiac belong- ing to Rev. William O. Dud- geon parked in front of his home. The collision knocked Rev. Dudgeon's car into the Bedford stone church bulle- tin sign located between the sidewalk and street curbing, knocking it down and dam- aging the sign. Damage to the Dudgeon car was esti- mated at $250. Damage to the McCandless car was es- timated at $175. Ricky Lee Whitehead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Whit- head, fell Monday night, cut- ting a gash in his forehead. He was taken to a doctor's of- fice where two stitches were required to close the wound. Four Mt. Carmel youths were apprehended by State Trooper Don Merchant and Mt. Carmel city police on Ju- ly 19 in connection with the robbery of the Biggs-Tisdale Insurance agency and the license branch in Winslow. The youths were caught while riding motorcycles sto- len from McDonald Service Station at Francisco. Pike County School Board will have a special meeting Monday evening, July 31, at 7 p.m. The meeting will review the budget for the coming year. Members of the board will review the budget for the coming year. The meeting is open to the public. David Mike Davis of Pe- tersburg sustained minor injuries Monday evening at 6:15 when he ran off the road near the Pike County State Forest on his motorcy- cle. Davis was taken to Da- viess County hospital, treat- ed and released. The motor- cycle was only slightly dam- aged. Deaths: Residents of Pike County and the Petersburg community were saddened by the news of the death of one of its well known and re- spected citizens, Lonnie J. Thomas, who died at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, at the Good Samaritan hospi- tal in Vincennes. He was 79, and a life long resident of Pike County; Archie Willis Montgomery, 82, of Patoka, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 25 in Gibson General hospital, Princeton, follow- ing several months illness from leukemia; Millie Lou Meyers, 74, native of Pike County died Thursday, July 20, in a Miami, Florida hos- pital; Basil "Peck" Greene, 60, of Terre Haute, former resident of Pike and Gibson counties was dead on arriv- al at a Terre Haute hospital of a heart attack, Sunday; Mrs. Bertha Church Had- ley, 72, of Oakland City died at 3 a.m. Monday in the Da- viess County hospital from cancer; Mrs. Lorella Mazel Dike, 52, of Princeton, na- tive of Glezen, died Sunday at 6 p.m. after an illness of six years. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, July 23, 1992 Jacy Robling was named Miss Pike County last Wednesday night. Melissa Richards was named First Runner-up and Tabitha Stur- geon was named Second Runner-up. Rick Fears was named principal at Pike Central by the Pike County School Board at a special Tuesday night meeting. Fears replac- es Bart McCandless, who re- signed July 9 to accept the principal's position at Gib- son Southern. Fears will be given a two-year contract at a salary of $52,000 as recom- mended by Superintendent Howard Briscoe. Fire destroyed the house of an Otwell family early Sunday morning. a neighbor noticed Fred Grove's house engulfed in flames at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning. "It was completely involved when we got there," said Jef- ferson Township Fire Chief Faron Grove, his wife Ginger and their two children were visiting in-laws in Otwell at the time of the fire. The State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation. Area police are investigat- ing an attack on a rural Pike County woman Sunday after- noon, while she was walking along the Line Road. It is be- ing investigated as a battery and attempted rape, accord- ing to Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Neidig. Weather officials are pre- dicting river levels that are just below flood stage at Pe- tersburg for the White Riv- er. Floods this time of year could damage thousands of acres of crops in the river bottoms. Marriages: Angela Ann Osgatharp and Scot- ty Wayne Krieg were unit- ed in marriage at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 at Vincent Christian Church in Otwell with Pastor Allen Dosch of- ficiating; Teresa Lynn Tur- pen and David Earl Harp- er were married Saturday, July 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the Winslow General Baptist Church.
