Poplar Street, Petersburg Senior Taylor Deffendoll scored sev- en goals and junior Kelsey Barrett added three more as the Pike Central High School girls' soccer team opened its season with a 15 -0 victory over host North Knox on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Senior Breana Cowan netted two goals while junior Emily Hill and soph- omores Morgan Houchins and Chloe Roy had one each. "I think the most important takeaway from this game is that the girls solidi- fied and got used to our new formation," Lady Chargers head coach James De- Crane said. "They passed well, commu- nicated well, and kept the pace of the game up. They are making great strides and improvements." "I couldn't be happier," DeCrane add- ed. "This is a team that has a lot of tal- ent and potential." DeCrane also announced the addi- tion of Pike Central alum Eric McCord as an assistant coach. "We are excited to have him on the team," DeCrane said. "He has many years experience as a player and has a lot to offer our team. I continue to work with and get advice and help from the coaches Western (PCHS boys' soccer head coach Chad Western and assistant coach Jacob Western)." The Lady Chargers, who played at Washington Catholic on Tuesday, Aug. 22, will host Tell City on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 8 p.m., before returning to the road for away matches at Evansville Day School on Thursday, Aug. 24, and at Vincennes Rivet on Saturday, Aug. 26. On Tuesday, Aug. 29, Pike Central will host South Spencer at 6 p.m. The Pike Central High School boys' soccer team opened its season by win- ning two of three matches during the River City Clas- sic in Evansville on Friday, Aug. 18, and Saturday, Aug. 19. On Friday, Aug. 18, se- nior Kyson Western scored three goals to lead the 11th- ranked Chargers to a 6 -1 vic- tory over Evansville Bosse. Seniors Breyton Booker and Gavin Boyd and junior Aus- tin Holder netted one goal apiece. Kyson Western also dished out two assists. Seniors Kaleb Claridge, Cameron Henson and Bri- ar Meadors had one assist each. Senior goalkeeper Ty- ler Tormohlen, meanwhile, had 13 saves. "(Bosse) has two very nice players, probably one of the best duos we will see this year," Pike Central head coach Chad Western said. "They have some other athletic guys that can create some problems, as they are very physical. But we kept composed." "We had a slow start, but kept grinding away during the game," Chad Western added. "We have to get bet- ter at playing 80 full minutes of good soccer." On Saturday, Aug. 19, a match against Evansville Reitz that was scheduled to start at 9 a.m. was delayed by lightning until 11:30 a.m. "No excuses, but this was probably not the best thing for us," Chad Western said. The Panthers would emerge with the victory, 3- 0. "We had several chances throughout the game to put goals away, and had a lot of good crosses," Chad West- ern said. "We just could not get one to go. Credit Reitz's goalie, who was very good, and their defense for dis- rupting us a lot when we had a chance also." Chad Western noted that Evansville Reitz scored its goals on a follow, a corner kick and an open look. "All things we must get better at," he said. Tormohlen had 10 saves in goal for the Chargers. "We had a few guys play well, but others were not at their best and have to play harder for us to be at the lev- el we want to," Chad West- ern said. "I thought Kaleb and Quade Claridge, along with Tyler Meadors, all played well and very hard on the defensive end for us." By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net When visiting Washington took a 2-0 lead in a best- of-five match on Wednesday, Aug. 16, it appeared it would be a short night for the Pike Central High School volleyball team. However, the Lady Chargers – after dropping the first two sets by scores of 25 -16 and 25 -18 – would rally to win the next two sets 25 -18 and 26 -24 before finishing off the Lady Hatchets with a 15 -11 victory in the decisive fifth set. "I think it was our attitudes," said Pike Central se- nior libero Morgan Whann when asked afterward about the Lady Chargers' comeback win. "Whenev- er we started out, those first two sets, we got down on ourselves, and attitude's everything on this team. Whenever our attitudes are down, it brings the whole thing down – our offense is down, our defense is down. It just brings everything down." "Once we turned our attitudes around and we got back on track, I think it just turned everything around," Whann continued. "We got our offense up. We got our defense up. The whole team just came together." Lady Chargers head coach Tonya Walton agreed. "I think it proved a lot to them, that fighting, per- severing, is going to get them places," Walton said of the come-from-behind victory. "I've been telling them all year, 'You guys have it! You can do it! You've just got to work for it! ' Tonight, I think really proved to them that they are capable of it. They've just got to keep a positive attitude and put forth that effort, and they'll have it." Washington, however, did not go down without a fight. In the third set, neither team was able to grab more than a two-point lead until the Lady Chargers scored back-to-back points off serves by senior Peyton Sor- gius to take an 8 -6 lead. A fter Washington scored three straight points to surge ahead 9 -8, a kill by junior Taylor Lamey tied the game at 9 -9. Then, after a block by freshman Bella Thorne gave the Lady Hatchets' a 10 -9 lead, a kill by sophomore Makayla Sipes was nullified – and a point was award- ed to Pike Central – when Washington junior Jenna Gray was called for serving out of turn. With the score tied at 10 -10, the two teams would stay within one point of each other until the Lady Chargers, trailing 16 -15, scored four straight points PCHS boys' soccer team wins two of three matches in River City Classic Deffendoll scores seven goals in 15-0 win at North Knox LADY CHARGERS OVERCOME TWO- SET DEFICIT TO BEAT WASHINGTON Pike Central High School junior Becca Crow (5) passes the ball during varsity game action on Tuesday, Aug. 16, against Washington.
