The team of Andy Que- ry, Bob Deffendoll, Terry Braun, Terry Gladish and Randy Bailey used Deffen- doll's putting skills to oust John Clinard, Mike Hig- don, Jim Cox and Mike Barrett. Higdon had what looked like the winning putt until Deffendoll near- ly holed out from 35 feet to claim victory for his team. August 10 Stan Helsley, Mike Hig- don, John Clinard and Jim Pell shot a 6 -under-par score of 30 for nine holes and were the winning four- some, outscoring five other four-man teams. Senior Men's Golf League action begins at 10 a.m. each Thursday, and all men are welcome to play. Defensively, I thought we did some pretty good things. It's just ... they're going to get some plays on you." Boger led the Chargers offensively, gaining 39 yards on 13 carries while also catching one pass for six yards. O'Neal added 23 yards on five carries. Alvey, meanwhile, picked up 12 yards on 13 rushing attempts while completing two of eight passes for 20 yards. Fields, who caught one pass for 14 yards, had one incomplete pass in as many attempts. "We want to not have to throw the ball," Mattingly said. "Alvey is a great quar- terback. He's going to be a great football player for us. But the style of team we want to be doesn't call for that." "We run a smash-mouth type offense based on run- ning the ball," Mattingly added. "We are not a very deep team, so we want to shorten games as much as possible so our depth doesn't become an issue." Last season, Mattingly noted, games involving Pike Central averaged approxi- mately 130 plays a game. On Friday night against Evans- ville Bosse, both teams com- bined for 103 plays. "The catch is though, if you shorten games – which we think is critical for our success – your chances to score are going to be lim- ited," Mattingly said. "So when we get it down in the red zone or inside the 15, we have to put points on the board." "Our offense philosophy is, like Woody Hayes said, three yards and a cloud of dust," Mattingly added. "We want to make it football in a phone booth. I know a lot of people won't like our style because it is not what they are used to or what they see on T V." Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Aug. 25, when the Chargers will host Princeton. The Tigers, who defeated Pike Central 47- 20 a year ago, opened their season with a 26 -19 loss to Evansville North. "We've got a lot to work on," Mattingly said. "Every team does, right? You go to work. You go to work on Monday and we'll work on stuff to get better at. We'll work on it in Week Two and we'll work on it in Week Ten." "We've got good kids," Mattingly added. "They're disappointed, sure, but they'll come back ready to work on Monday." Kickoff for Friday night's game is set for 7:30 p.m., Eastern time. Ed Cahill photo Powers leads Lady Chargers cross country team to third-place finish in Forest Park Invitational By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Halley Powers fin- ished fifth out of 54 total runners as the Pike Cen- tral High School girls' cross country team placed third in the season-opening Forest Park Invitational on Thurs- day, Aug. 17. Powers completed the 3.1-mile course with a time of 22 minutes, 53 seconds, eight seconds behind For- est Park's Josie Berg, who placed fourth with a time of 22:45. "Halley Powers ran a very smart race," Lady Chargers head coach Josh Roach said. "In the past, she has had a tendency to start out way too fast and struggle the back half of the race. Today, she found a pace that she could stick with for most of the race. She was sitting in sixth place with about 100 meters left and dug deep and took off to catch and pass the girl in fifth (place)." Freshman Lauren Young finished 13th with a time of 24:40, senior Cailey Fur- man was 18th with a time of 26:04.6 (placing one-half second behind Forest Park's Amber Theising who placed 17th with a time of 26:04.1); freshman Charlotte Duden- hoeffer was 25th with a time of 26:37; junior Lil- lie Pancake was 28th with a time of 27:31; freshman Jenna Meyer was 30th with a time of 27:51; senior Brit- tany Young was 33rd with a time of 28:05; and junior Er- in Craig was 41st with a time of 29:03. "Our freshmen got a great taste of what the high school distance is like and respond- ed very well," Roach said. "They were able to go out there and get the nerves out of the way and help our team tremendously." As a team, Pike Central scored 76 points, trailing Forest Park (23 points) and Jasper (48 points). Craw- ford County placed fourth with 101 points, while Te- cumseh was fifth with 137 points. Castle, Heritage Hills, Northeast Dubois and South Spencer also par- ticipated but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. In the boys' race, fresh- man Ijaa Chambers placed 15th out of 102 total runners with a time of 18:48 as the Chargers finished fourth out of eight teams. Senior Caden Armstrong was 18th with a personal course record time of 18:59, a 13-second improvement over the 19:12 he ran in the same race as a junior; senior Draven Huff was 20th with a personal course record time of 19:06, a 14-second im- provement over the 19:20 he posted in the same race as a junior; and sophomore Nate Woolery was 21st with a per- sonal course record time of 19:07, a 19 -second improve- ment over the 19:26 he ran in the same race as a freshman. Meanwhile, freshman Colt Armstrong was 32nd with a time of 19:52; se- nior Garrett Manges was 57th with a time of 21:33 (a 77-second improvement over the 23:50 he ran in the same race as a junior); senior Ja- cob Bohnert was 60th with a personal course record time of 21:44; sophomore A.J. Hill was 63rd with a personal course record time of 21:52 (a 220 -second improvement over the 25:32 he ran in the same race as a freshman); freshman Sam Jones was 67th with a time of 22:10 ; sophomore Sam Theising was 70th with a personal course record time of 22:26 (an 81-second improvement over the 24:17 he ran in the same race as a freshman); senior Lane Ridao was 82nd with a time of 23:35; and freshman Lane Potts was 83rd with a time of 23:37. "The boys ran this race in a way they are going to have to run to be able to advance far in the state tournament," Roach said. "They packed to- gether very well for most of the race. Ijaa, Caden, Draven and Nate were basically side by side until the last mile of the race. Then we had a pack not too far behind them with Colt, Garrett and Jacob for most of the race as well." "To be able to do that from the get go shows how hard these guys have worked over the summer and how much they enjoy competing for each other," Roach added. "I truly believe that their times will get to the level they need to be so that when they pack together like that, they will be an extremely tough time out come postseason racing time. Even our eight through 12 runners gave us a lot to be excited about as they prog- ress through this year." Last year, Roach noted, the Chargers had three run- ners with times of under 22 minutes. "This year, our top eight runners came in under 22 minutes and our 9 through 12 were not too far behind," Roach said. "That makes for very competitive races among each other and very competitive practices. These boys take that competition in stride and it just makes them closer as a team." As a team, Pike Central scored 103 points, trailing Castle (40 points), jasper (64) and Heritage Hills (85). Northeast Dubois was fifth with 107 points, followed by Forest Park (113), Craw- ford County (218) and Te- cumseh (220). South Spen- cer also participated but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. "All of our girls and boys had strong finishes, and that's a huge thing for me be- cause it shows a lot of men- tal toughness to go out and run as long as they do and still be willing to sprint at the end," Roach said. "That type of mental toughness shows that there will be a lot of im- provement as the year goes along because of how hard they are willing to work." Pike Central, which com- peted in the Southridge In- vitational on Tuesday, Aug. 22, will host North Knox on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Prides Creek Park starting at 5 p.m. Bohnert ties school record to lead Lady Chargers girls' golf team Junior Natalie Bohnert shot a school-record tying three-over-par 39 as the Pike Central High School girls' golf team placed first in a three-team match played at the Country Oaks Golf Course on Thursday, Aug. 17. Bohnert's nine-hole score matched the school record set by senior team- mate Natalie Burkhart last year during the Lady Chargers' season-opening match on the same course. "Natalie Bohnert played a great round of golf," Pike Central head coach Jar- rod Gideon said. "She has worked very hard on her game and it's starting to pay off. It's really cool to have both nine-hole record holders on the same team." Burkhart, who also shot a 39 in a match played at the Prides Creek Golf Course last season, had a triple bo- gey on the final hole to fin- ish with a 9 -over-par 45. Senior Mackenzie De- Weese, meanwhile, strug- gled on the final three holes to shoot a 14-over-par 50. "She finished with a 10, a triple bogey and a double bogey," Gideon said. "She played the first six holes just about as well as I've ev- er seen her play." Senior Morgan DeWeese had a 16 -over-par 52, soph- omore Hadley Holder shot a 17-over-par 53, and se- nior Jalah Barnes added a 21-over-par 57. As a team, Pike Central scored a 184. Washington placed second with a 194, while Vincennes Lincoln finished third with a 202. "If we finish the round stronger, we could have easily been in the low 170s," Gideon said. "I like the way we are progressing. All the girls are putting in extra time and I think the best is yet to come for us this sea- son." On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Bohnert shot a 5 -over- par 41 as the Lady Char- gers finished second in a three-team meet played at the Huntingburg Country Club. Burkhart had an 11-over- par 47, while Mackenzie DeWeese had a 13-over- par 49 and sophomore Had- ley Holder fired an 18 -over- par 54. "I think we were getting a little worn down," Gideon said. "We have had some- thing like five straight road matches in the past seven days. It will be good for us to get a day off ... and have the weekend off to start fresh with the second half of the season." Pike Central played at North Knox on Mon- day, Aug. 21, at the Bick- nell Country Club, and du- eled with South Knox and Wood Memorial on Tues- day, Aug. 22, at the Coun- try Club of Old Vincennes. The Lady Chargers will re- turn to CCOV on Thurs- day, Aug. 24, to take on North Daviess and Vin- cennes Lincoln, before re- turning to the Prides Creek Golf Course to host Gibson Southern and North Posey on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 5:30 p.m. Chargers junior varsity boys' soccer team shuts out South Knox, 2-0 The Pike Central High School junior varsity boys' soccer team improved to 2-1 with a 2-0 victory over host South Knox on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Sophomore Alfredo Stewart and freshman Connor Young scored for the Chargers, while soph- omores Sam Henson and Carson Johnson both had assists. Freshman goal- keeper Sammy Ballard re- corded the shutout. "Sammy did a really nice job the whole game," Pike Central head coach Chad Western said. "(Sopho- more) Paxton Knies played really well and was all over the field, winning balls, and had us transitioning into our offense." "(Sophomore) Jersey Mills was great at both ends of the field, playing on offense and defense," Western added. "(Sopho- more) Jacob Barber and (freshman) Hunter Cape- hart had several opportu- nities to score and created for others, also." PCMS girls' soccer team wins, 6-3 Wren Kabrick scored three goals while Alli Hold- er added two as the Pike Central Middle School girls' soccer team defeat- ed Princeton 6 -3 on Mon- day, Aug. 14. Kennedy Willis rounded out the scoring for the La- dy Chargers with one goal. Pike Central will host Vincennes Rivet on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m., then travel to Vin- cennes Lincoln on Thurs- day, Aug. 31. SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
