Page 7 January 27, 2017 Sports Varisty boys basketball off to a The Red Bluff High School Varsity Boy's Basketball team is off to a humble start as they begin league play. Basketball is a sport that is played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court and contains the objective of shooting the a ball through the hoop to score. The team with the most points in the end of the game is th one who wins. There are many techniques for ball-handling—shooting, passing, dribbling, and rebounding. Basketball teams generally have player positions, the tallest and strongest members of a team are called a center or power forward, while slightly shorter and more agile players are called small forward, and the shortest players or those who possess the best ball handling skills are called a point guard or shooting guard. The point guard directs the on court action of the team, implementing the coach's game plan, and managing the execution of offensive and defensive plays. The team currently has a record of 1-2 but members of the team are happy with how they are playing. Their recent win over Chico put them on a great start for their season, and allowed them to see what it meant to play a successful game from start to finish. Brayden Hutchens, a junior on the team, says, "The team is doing pretty well. We have some things that we can work on, but we are always working towards being better and executing plays more efficiently on the court." The team's biggest goal is to be c o n sid e r e d the best d e f e n s i v e team in the league, and Hutchens believes that they are on their way to doing so. Although the team is doing well, they still are working hard to make improvements to how they are playing on the court. " O n e of the improvements the team i s trying t o i m p r o v e upon is team unity," says Evan Tanner, a senior on the team. According to Tanner, unity is an idea that the team has struggled with from the beginning. However, the team is staying optimistic, with a goal to bounce back in league play. Tanner stated, "We need to come together as one and gain unity. There is The Red Bluff High School Varsity Boys soccer team continues to be successful on the field. The team is led by team captains, Kevin Meza, Jose Montoya, Jose Birrueta, and Alejandro Alvarez. Kevin Meza and Alejandro Alvares have played Varsity their four years here at Red Bluff High School. Their starting line-up includes: Kevin Meza (forward), Alex Valencia (Forward) Alejandro Alvarez (CMID), Jonathan Valencia (CMID), Jose Birrueta (RMID), Salvador Santoyo (LMID), Eddie Tapia (CDEF), Jose Montoya (sweeper), Aaron Rodriguez (LDEF), Andres Farias (RMID), Jose Garcia (goalkeeper). The Spartans hold a 2-2 record in league, with a 9 wins 4 ties 1 loss overall record. "The guys have so much potential, and I can see us going very far this season," added head coach, Claudio Martinez. Last Friday, the Varsity boys faced off against the Foothill Cougars. They were able to pull a 3-0 win with hard work from the entire team with 1 goal scored in the first half and 2 in the second. The winning goals were scored by, Ezequiel Cruz, Alex Valencia, and Kevin Meza. The team has four freshmen that have fought hard for their positions on the field. The freshmen are Aaron Rodriguez, Miki Ago, Eddie Tapia, and Mario Ascencio. When asked what it felt like to be an underclassmen on Varsity, Aaron Rodriguez replied with, "It's really fun, I just see them as older brothers now. I look up to the Seniors and I look at it as an honor, because not everyone is as privileged as we were to start on Varsity as freshmen." Miki Ago agreed and added, "I look at it as an opportunity to get better and grow not only as a player, but as a person." The boys have high expectations for the rest of the season. They look forward to the competition they have yet to play against and they hope to keep on pulling more wins. When asked how he felt about this being his last year, Senior. Kevin Meza, explained, "It's a sad feeling knowing that it's the last time I play on the field with these guys. The Spartan's next league home game is today against the Shasta High School Wolves at 4:00. Sarah Herrera Staff Writer Noah Caylor Staff Writer Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the history of mankind. It is a contact sport that involves grappling, joint locks, holds, and takedowns. The sport can be done for fun or it can be intensely competitive. It's you physically taking down another person one on one and the Red Bluff High School JV wrestling team is doing phenomenal. T h e w r e s t l i n g team which c o n s i s t s of around thirty people has won three of their eight duels for this year and is hoping for a positive season. When asked how he prepares for the wrestling season, freshman Steven Brewer answered, "I try to cut weight so I can wrestle in a lower weight class and don't have to wrestle against fatties." Brewer, himself, has won one match this year. Brewer believes the hardest thing about wrestling is perseverance. "It can be difficult keeping the pressure on and holding your own against a harder opponent." To warm up Brewer only stretches, he does not do anything special. To warm-up Alex Serrano, another freshman, weighs in and goes in for a groom check. During a groom check the referees check how long your n a i l s a r e , h o w m u c h y o u weigh, a n d m a k e s u r e y o u do not have anything on you before you wrestle. With many athletic people ready to put in hard work and perform, the JV wrestling team is looking forward to a bright season. Varsity boys The Red Bluff High School 2016-2017 Girls Junior Varsity basketball team have been playing at a cutthroat level. Under the coaching ability of Casey Colwell the team has achieved a record of 11-2 as of January 20, 2017. Sophomore Sydney Sinclair who has been playing for six years and plays the position Logan Carver Staff Writer humble start as league play begins Wrestling pins the game into a winning season Junior varsity girls basketball plays at cutthroat level Spartan's Coach of the Issue Ty Minto: Wrestling T his month's Coach of the Issue is Ty Minto. This is his fifth year as a wrestling coach at Red Bluff High School. When he was asked why he decided to become a wrestling coach Minto said, "I enjoy seeing kids have success and I like seeing them set a goal and achieve it." "I love witnessing an athlete's success," is what Minto responded with when he was asked why he liked coaching. At the end of the day, his motto is "Never let your kid grow up to be a Corning Cardinal." Coach of the Issue/Marissa Mills The Red Bluff High School freshmen boys basketball team starts off the season with a good beginning: 2-1. In the Chico tournament, the freshmen boys placed second and played Enterprise, Chico and Anderson. Kenny Button, the team's head coach, runs the team with a positive attitude in order to encourage his team to keep pushing forward. Tyler Schorovsky, the team's point guard, has been playing Bryce Stephenson Staff Writer Frosh boys bball begins an excellent season for around seven years. He claims that Pleasant Valley will be their toughest competitor, and his goal for points is averaging 17 points a game. "Our strengths are shooting and being aggressive. Our weaknesses are ball control," said Schorovsky. He would like to see the freshman boys score 90 points in one game. Brendon Weik plays the position small forward, and against Foothill High School, he scored twelve points. When Weik was asked what the team needs to work on in practice, he stated, "We are trying to work on better team basketball." Weik said that his shooting range is anywhere close to the key. Justin Hinkston, another point guard, has recently come back from a broken wrist injury. While he was injured, Hinkston worked on his form shooting and watched a lot of basketball videos to improve his game. The freshmen boy's basketball team's next game is on Friday, February 3 at 4:30 P.M. playing the Chico Panthers at Chico. post stated that her favorite part about the sport is getting to play with such great girls and getting to bond each and everyone of them. Sinclair says that her personal goal for the season is to average five rebounds per game; Sinclair also stated that the high school team is a lot more exciting than playing from Bend, way more competitive! I love it! Sophomore Karli Rodriguez stated, "I have been playing since I came out of the womb." She mostly plays shooting guard, but depending on the situation she also plays other positions. "My favorite part about playing basketball is that I get to play the game I love with some of my best friends." said Rodriguez. Rodriguez said that her personal goal for the season is to make a half court buzzer beater. Sophomore Bailey Diggs plays point guard, and has been playing for three years. Diggs' team goal is for the team to work together as a team; her personal goal for the season is to improve on her shooting. The Junior Varsity basketball teams next game is today against Pleasant Valley basketball team at Pleasant Valley High School. Another weakness the team has identified is their rebounding. Jarron Barrow, a junior on the team, states that this maybe one of their toughest improvements to make. "If we are able to improve upon rebounding, we could be more successful under the hoop and have more opportunities to score," said Barrow. Overall, the team has a very optimistic outlook when they think about the season ahead, and are highly motivated to continue to work hard on and off the court in order to reach their goals as a team and become better players over the course of the season. Their next game will take place a week from today, on February 3rd, at Chico High School. The game will begin at 7:30 and the team would love to see some fans fill the opposing team's stands for their next league game. soccer succeeds
