On August 28, 1963 peaceful protesters gathered around the Lincoln Memorial to demand equal justice to all citizens under the law. Here he delivered his " I Have A Dream" speech. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the life and achievements of King. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's in honor began soon after Only up until recently has Red Bluff High adopted the Mock Trial system and it's thanks to senior student, Nero Dotson and AP World History teacher, Mr. Norton. Around a year and a half ago, Dotson asked for Norton's help in starting a Mock Trial club at Red Bluff High to help inspire students to pursue something in law or to just try something. Starting the Mock Trial program at Red Bluff High helped do that. As of now, there are three staff members running Mock Trial with Nero Dotson: Mr. Norton, Mr. Anderson and Rob Taylor. Mr. Norton is the head coach of Mock Trial and helps to make plans within the club to make sure everything runs smoothly. Mock Trial is a California based club that is performed annually by schools across the state and starts with each participating school receiving a packet from CRF (Constitutional Rights Foundation) that contains information about a fictional court case which students will learn about. The packet that each participating school gets is created and produced by CRF and is based on a current and important issue facing America's youth. The purpose of the program was to provide students with an understanding of America's judicial system and help them acquire skills such as logical thinking, public speaking and memorization of facts. Each Mock Trial club that is participating in the program will compose an official team to compete against other schools in the county then the winner of the county competition will move onto state championships. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted, by giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially accepted into all of the 50 states in 2000. There are standing traditions that take place on this day. It is seen as a day to promote equal rights for all Americans, regardless of their background. Some schools mark the day to teach their students about about the work of Dr. King and the struggle against racial segregation and racism, while other schools take the day off and remain closed. In recent years, federal legislation has encouraged Americans to give some of their time on this day as volunteers in citizen action groups. This was also the first holiday honor and commemorate an individual black American. The legacy of the man who brought hope to the African American community continues to live on. Mr. Anderson is the assistant coach and offers his room up for club meetings on Wednesdays and Fridays. Rob Taylor is the staff member that teaches every club member how to present yourself in court and how the court operates. For the first time in Mock Trial history, the club will have an official team to face off against other teams in the county. So far, the plans will be to have the club compete in either Shasta or Tehama county and if there are no opposing teams then the Red Bluff High team will move onto to compete in state championships. While the name of the judge that will be directing the competition in the county is unknown, they will be a real and qualified judge. Coming into the new semester, there is a countless variety of school activities for the springtime, including the new spring musical, 'Godspell' by Stephen Schwartz. Starring seniors Ethyn Williams as Jesus, Gabriel Crooks as John the Baptist, and Adam Kinner as Judas, 'Godspell' includes the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of Luke, and parables in the New Testament. Set in the 1970's, 'Godspell' is a retelling of Jesus Christ and his disciples' work before Jesus' crucifixion. The story begins in New York City, centering on a group of ten people who dislike each other and disagree on the topic of God. Jesus then arrives and takes the fighting group in; he teaches them how to love and respect one another, and they become a diverse yet harmonious community. The community works together to make more friends and a peaceful environment around them. Through his work, Jesus makes the new-found friends his disciples so they can teach others the lessons they have learned. Though the story is not religious, it promotes community, friendship, and acceptance of individuality. The musical will be co- directed by Mrs. Bonjean Coleman heading the acting and Mrs. Hassay directing the music. Mr. Kinner and Woodshop will build the set. Gabriel Crooks will be accompanying on the guitar, and Leslie Soto and Nathan Townley will play the piano. For several actors, this will be their last performance before graduation. Ethyn Williams is excited for his role in the play, adding, "It's my last performance, so I want to go out with a bang." As for the directors, they are excited for the performance and hope that the musical leaves a lasting impression. This will be Mrs. Bonjean Coleman's first time working with Mrs. Hassay as a director on a theatre performance, and she is looking forward to future collaboration with the music department. For Mrs. Bonjean Coleman, she wants the message of the musical to be clear to the audience. She states, "It's my hope that when people leave the theatre, in this politically charged climate that they can appreciate the individuality of others whether they agree with each other or not." Mrs. Hassay is also excited for the show, and she wants every audience member to leave with the joy of watching young performers who put in long hours to produce a major production. Mrs. Hassay's favorite song as a kid was "Day by Day", and she can not wait to watch the actors perform it.
