Do you think you can fix my hair like that?" Just where did all these ideas come from? Each question or comment above was spoken by one of my daughters and inspired by none other than Pinterest, the latest social network. There are tons of ideas on every subject imaginable and, in spite of the fact that we haven't started sewing yet, our cupcakes didn't turn out like the ones in the picture, and I definitely need more practice braiding, we're having lots of fun! Even though I'm enjoying Pinterest, though, I'm not sure I'm buying into it completely. Pinterest claims to be the place to "organize and share the things you love." Well, organizing is certainly some- thing I need help with, and I'm all for sharing, but I'm not certain things are what I should love. I'm pretty sure I have too many things that I'm attached to already. I need to learn to let some go, not keep adding more. I do like that Pinterest has provided some ideas for things to do with my daughters, though, so I think I'll make my own slogan. How about "Share some fun things with the people you love!"? After all, do I really love shelves made out of gutters? I may like them. I may even think they're pretty great. (They are really cute!) But do I love them? Surely not. The word love is often thrown around in such a casual way and so frequently applied to things. I might say I love chocolate, the beach, a pair of shoes, hydrangeas... But I don't believe that God loves things. He loves people and He wants me to do the same. The problem is that people can be hard to love. It's much easier to love curtains or a lamp. Sometimes relationships can get about as messy as making red velvet cupcakes. At least with the cupcakes there's a recipe to go by. I bet Pinterest even has some cute ideas for aprons in case of a mishap. But as far as relationships go you're on your own. Pinterest may be called a social network, but it's really a pretty solitary thing. You see something you like and you pin it on a board. And there it stays unless you move it. Try that with a disagreeable person in your life and let me know how it works out… Of course, there is a book that's been around for a long time with instructions for handling relation- ships. I've even pinned some of the words on a real bulletin board in an effort to learn them by heart! I'm talking about the Bible, of course. It's full of wisdom about doing life with other people- something I need even more than a good recipe for chili or directions on how to organize my pantry. I'm not bashing Pinterest, though. It may not impart wisdom about loving others, but it is a tool God can use in relationships. It's sparked my daughters' imaginations and I'm thrilled to be included in their projects and plans. I'm new to Pinterest and if you look at my boards, you won't see much. Even so, I have several friends who are "following" me and I'm praying that the things they pin will provide some fun ways for them to spend time with the people they love. Maybe I'll even be lucky enough to be one of those people! I've noticed that some of my friends have over 100 followers. I guess if I get that many, I'll have to come up with a creative way to organize the names of all the people I'll be praying for. When I do, I'll be sure to pin my idea on one of my boards.
