"Cleveland County's Community Newspaper" OCEAN LAKES MYRTLE BEACH, SC "A Family Favorite" BOOK YOUR SPRING & SUMMER VACATION shelbyinfo.com Our 29th Year • Issue No. 4 • January 26, 2012 Your National Connection to Local Media HarvestWorks Cafe And Bakery HarvestWorks, located at 891 North Post Road in Shelby, now has a full time cafe and bakery. Monday through Friday, beginning at BUSINESS CONNECTION Featuring The Chamber's News & Events See Page 35 www.clevelandchamber.org 8am, the cafe serves up a delicious homemade livermush biscuit or cinnamon bun with coffee for just $2.00. Other breakfast specials are also available. Beginning at 12 noon until 2pm, the cafe offers a featured hot lunch for $5.00, or a chef salad or 3-salad plate for $6.00. The homemade soup of the day is always a favorite and so is the turkey or ham and cheese sub. Meanwhile, the smell of fresh baked breads and speciality loaves permeate the air. Cookies, cinnamon rolls, large cupcakes, goodie bars, pecan sticky buns, homemade pies (whole or by the slice), cheesecake, quick breads, yeast breads and dinner breads fill the show cases and shelves. The pumpkin-cranberry loaf is a signature quick bread and very popular. A new item is the buttermilk-blueberry loaf. The cafe and bakery came about when a Mennonite raised baker from Ohio fell in love with the HarvestWorks program and the kids. Her name is Louise Dowell and she brings years of experi- ence in homemade goodness with her. Louise lovingly teaches the HarvestWorks youngsters how to bake with hands on training. It's all good and it's all for a good cause. The cafe and bakery is best experienced from the inside where you can enjoy the sights and smells of real home- made goodness. However, if you can't make it in, HarvestWorks Cafe and Bakery also delivers. Just call 704-487-7777. –M. A. Andrews shelbyinfo.com DATES NOW! Stain is pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree in Accounting and holds a 4.0 grade point average. Stain says the close proximity of the school to her family and the inexpensive cost of tuition fit into her educational plan perfectly. "Honestly, after I looked at several universities I knew CCC was the right choice for me," she admits. "CCC had everything I was looking for to begin my education which made my decision very easy." Stain has not only excelled inside the classroom, but is also a true leader outside of the classroom where she serves as a Peer Tutor in accounting, business, and economics in CCC's Student Success Center. "I have always enjoyed working with numbers and finances. Tutoring other students in these areas is something I really enjoy," she says. "I definitely get excited when I see the light bulb come on for the students I tutor." As a homeschool student, beginning in the fourth grade, Stain says she was a little apprehensive about transitioning into a public school setting; especially on the college level, but her transition has been seamless. "I've always felt welcome, safe, and comfortable on campus and the instructors are incredibly helpful and friendly. Plus, the amount of resources available has been a wonderful tool in my success. CCC has prepared me in so many ways." The North Carolina Community College's Academic Award winners are chosen from each of the 58 NC Community Colleges. The students are selected for their aca- demic accomplishments and leadership ability. They also excel in the classroom and are dedicated to making a difference on their campuses and in their communities. Strata Solar developed this 28 acre solar farm on Dixon Dairy Road to supply power for Duke Energy over a 20 year contract period. With 22,000 panels this farm is the second largest facility in the state and should be able to supply enough power to serve the needs of approximately 616 homes. The Kings Mountain project took about three months to complete and provided work for more| than 70 installers and engineers. The company expects to build 10 similar farms this year and Cleveland County could potentially be a recipient of more jobs.
