Special Holiday Edition RBHS celS celebrates 21st tournament School comes t s together to rar to raise spirit for t Alaina Rudnick Staff Writer "I think anytime you have an event where the school and community work together it, provides a sense of pride is established," said athletic director Rich Hassay of the Holiday Classic basketball tournament. "From Wednesday until Saturday we probably have about two thousand people attend the Holiday Classic. In running the tournament we try to provide our guest and students with a first class event." This year eight boys and eight girls varsity basketball teams will be attending the tournament from up and down the west coast. "It gives Red Bluff High students an opportunity to meet and compete with students from Portland, Oregon, to San Diego, California. One of the advantages of us hosting the tournament is that we can bring in athletes from different areas and expose our students to different ideas and ways of life," said Hassay. "I think it is one of our best opportunities each year to work with the community collaboratively and I think we all benefit from that effort," said Principal Patrick Gleason. "Originally there was only a wrestling tournament. It's [now] on December 10, and the basketball tournament is r the Holiday C on December 14 through 17. It began…in 1991 and was put together by former principal Mr.Pelanconi and the former boys basketball coach and athletic director Mr.Prestwood," said Hassay. This makes this tournament the twenty-first. "MJ Cross was also a major part of starting the tournament." said Gleason. On the basketball aspect of the tournament, Hassay said "It's a very high caliber y Classic t tournament and always offers exciting play. It's a varsity only tournament, but many of our younger athletes and students look forward to this event each year. Regardless of our teams' records during the tournament I know they will play hard and represent their school and community well." Some of the main goals of the tournament, Hassay said three.
