December 9, 2011 Holiday Classic Insert 4 Varsity Wrestling is focusing on 'performing well' Connor Ross Insert Editor The Varsity Wrestling team competed at a tournament they go to every year called "The Doc Peterson" and didn't do as well as they would have liked. "We didn't do so hot," said senior Gabe Rivera. Only four people placed for Red Bluff in their weight class- es; Kyle Case placed second in the 152's, Gabe Rivera placed third in the 160's, Bryce Eggert placed third in the 185's, and Marco Gonzalez also placed third in the 106's. "This year is going to be a real challege because it is a lot of the wrestlers first time wres- tling for the Varsity team," said Rivera. The Varsity team doesn't have anybody to wrestle in any of catagories over the 185 weight classes, which is a huge disadvantage for them caus- ing them to basically be down in points right frm the start of matches. Photos by Connor Ross Dalton Gutierrez puts a move on Jordan Mcmanus during practice. "This is one of the smallest teams we have had in a long time," explains Marco Gonza- lez. The Varsity team has four spots on the roster they could fill up but they don't have any one able to fill those weight Eddie Samay throws his sparring mate to the mat. classes. "The good thing about hav- ing a small team is that our coach can teach us thing more directly and it is easier to pick up stuff," says sophomore Zach Dittner. They have Holiday Classic this weekend are are looking forward to a tough weekend. Last year they placed third overall, but are not focused on that this year. "We want to focus on pre- forming well in the matches not on just winning them," says Gonzalez. League play for the wrestlers is also going to be a challege. When asking the team who their biggest challege was to be they all agreed on one oppo- nent: Chico. They want to also focus on their team unity and 2011-2012 Varsity W Gabe Rivera 5 ft. 7 in.
