November 10-November 16, 2011 It's A www.shelbyinfo.com It's A Good LifeGood Life National Memory Screening Day November 15, 2011 In honor of National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month (November), the Neal Senior Center (100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby, NC 28150) is proud to announce that we have been selected again to be a National Memory Screening Site for National Memory Screening Day, which is an initiative of the National Alzheimer's Foundation of America on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 9:00 am until 11:45 am and 1:00- 3:45 pm, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. It is estimated that as many as 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. The number is escalating in line with the aging population; the first baby boomers turn 65 in 2011. Advanced age is the greatest risk factor, with the incidence of the disease doubling every five years between 65 and 95. National Memory Screening Day serves as a starting point for discussions about memory concerns and lifestyle changes—diet, managing stress, physical exercise—that may help people age successfully. Memory problems could be caused by Alzheimer's disease or other medical conditions. A memory screening averages five to ten minutes, and consists of questions and tasks to assess memory. Current or retired healthcare professionals from Cleveland County will serve as screening administrators. The screening is a safe, cost-efficient (it's free) intervention that can reassure the healthy individual, promotes successful aging and, when indicated, directs individuals to appropriate clinical resources. It does not diagnose any illness, but can indicate whether someone should pursue a medical exam. It is estimated that missed diagnoses of dementia may be as high as 90 percent. Who should be screened? Memory screenings make sense for anyone concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of demen- tia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; or who believe they are at risk due to a family history of Alzheimer's disease or a related illness. Screenings also are appropriate for anyone who does not have a concern right now, but who wants to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons. For more information or if you would like to make an appointment to participate in the screenings to be held at the Neal Senior Center, please call 704-482-3488. Attention Cleveland County Men The Gin Rummy Gang, which meets each morning (Tuesday – Friday) around 9:00 am at the Neal Senior Center to play Gin Rummy of course as well as to enjoy some good conversation and a cup or two of Joe, is looking to increase its membership.
