That's why the nurses in the Women's and Children's Department at Cleveland Regional Medical Center (CRMC) work hard to give every baby born at CRMC a strong, healthy start in life. The nurses at CRMC work with every newborn's family to promote infant safe sleep, but during the month of October a special emphasis is added. October is National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) awareness month. This is a chance to help new parents and other caregivers throughout the community remember the safety measures they can take to reduce the risk of SIDS and other infant sleep related deaths. "Early prenatal care, not smoking while pregnant and a smoke-free environment all help reduce the risk of SIDS," said Betsy Bryant, RNC, MSN who works in the Women's and Children's Services Department at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. "In addition, there are steps parents and caregivers can take after the baby is born that also reduce the risk of SIDS such as breastfeeding, use of firm bedding materials, and positioning the infant on his or her back when sleeping." Knowing these simple things can greatly reduce the risk of SIDS. That's why CRMC has partnered with the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation (NCHSF) to present each baby born at CRMC during October a "onesie" baby garment with the safe sleep message "Stomach to Play, Back to Sleep, For Baby's Safe Sleep." "We hope the message on these onesies will remind parents and caregivers that placing a baby on his or her back to sleep during the first year of life is the most effective way to reduce the risk of SIDS," Bryant said. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a separate sleeping space for baby, but one that is close to parents because research has shown that there is a reduced risk of SIDS when baby is in the same room with parents. In addition to SIDS deaths, many babies die from accidental suffocation and strangulation. These preventable deaths are often related to babies being placed in unsafe sleep environ- ments. Babies can suffocate on couches, waterbeds, softer mattresses and sleep surfaces, and by getting up against or trapped in other soft bedding materials. Caregivers should also keep baby's sleeping area away from any curtains or cords and remove any strings or ties. The AAP also recommends that parents consider use of a pacifier at sleep time for for- mula fed babies and for breastfed babies once breastfeeding has been well established. Taking these simple steps to make any baby's sleeping area safe will mean the baby rests better and so will you. Safe Sleep Habit Recommendations from the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation: 1. Always place healthy babies on their backs for nighttime sleep and for naps. Letting babies sleep on their backs has other advantages besides lowering their chances of SIDS. Research shows that babies who sleep on their backs have: Fewer colds Fewer ear infections Fewer fevers $ OCTOBER 14 GATES OPEN AT NOON SCOOT PITTMAN 7:00PM POWER DAM BROTHERS FALL fear farm THECorbitt entrance on left at bottom of hill. 14th 21st 28th BLACKSBURG, SC Primitive Camping Available •NO GLASS •NO ATVS •NO WEAPONS •NO DRUGS •GRILLS ONLY - No open fi res LOCATION: 3757 HARRIS CREEK RD. - LAWNDALE, NC From Hwy. 74 - Take Hwy 226 N to the second yellow fl ake Hwy 226 N to the second yellow fl ashing light, turn right on Union Church Rd.
