The Cannon Foundation was established in 1943 by the late Charles A. Cannon, President and Chairman of Cannon Mills Company for more than 50 years. Mr. Cannon demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the people of Cabarrus County and the State of North Carolina through his philanthropy. • Our objective is to create a 24 hour 7 Day a week shelter where no one gets turned out into the elements due to lack of space; a place to shelter men, and feed hungry women and children in our community at one location. We will provide a community clinic for those in need and put a stop to unnecessary visits to the E.R., saving our hospital on average $16,000 annually per homeless individual. In addition to providing a meal and a bed, we will provide classes for GED, Financial training, and Employment preparation. There will also be a chapel for daily bible studies and weekly chapel services. • The new location of the Shelter will be 1100 Buffalo Street, Shelby, NC 28150. All final architect plans are complete with approved building permits. • The Cleveland County Rescue Mission is a not for profit 501c3, Christian faith based organization, whose governing board is the Inter-faith Alliance Corp. • "We are one step closer to the dream of changing lives becoming a reality. Every dollar received for the Cleveland County Rescue Mission is more than a donation. It actually goes into the shaping of destinies, making of character, and giving hope to people. Dollars to the Mission will lengthen days, wipe away tears, and spell opportunity for a countless number of people. The time to get involved is now." Michael Gullatte, Executive Director. • You can send your tax deductible contribution to: • Cleveland County Rescue Mission • P.O. CALL 704-692-2248 CAMPERS/RVs A Self Destructing Structure The wrecking ball was the common tool of building de- molition in the 50's and 60's. It was a large steel orb weighing anywhere from 1/2 to 6 tons, at- tached by steel cable to a large crane. The crane would move back and forth causing the de- vice to crash into the exterior of the building, destroying as much as possible with each rotation. While wrecking balls can still be found on some demolition with Richard Prow rpcrosswords@gmail.com sites, the common practice now is the use of plastic explo- sives. Engineers select key structural points throughout the interior of the building and then a demolition team goes to work rigging explosives to those sensitive areas. Once deto- nation of the explosives takes place the building implodes from within. In essence, with a little manipulation in just the right spots, the structure destroys itself. Think the World Trade Centers. One of Satan's names in the Bible is Apollyon, which means destroyer (Rev. 9:11). Jesus said that Satan's goal is only to "kill, steal, and destroy" (John 10;10). His target for destruction? The church. As a master of destruction Satan knows the best way to attempt to take down a "structure" is to attack it from within, using it's own members to destroy one another. Through gos- sip, backbiting and unforgivingness Satan destroys the local congregations. Through false teaching, jealousy, and denom- inational discontentment he destroys the church on a broader basis. He is essentially using the weight of the body of Christ to destroy itself. When Gideon was directed to go into battle against the Midianites he did so with just 300 men armed with trum- pets and empty jars (Judges 7:16). With those utensils they caused such a ruckus within the enemy camp that their foes turned on each other. The massive Midianite army wound up defeating themselves. So the church will as well if we do not wake up to the strate- gic attacks of our enemy. "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against fl esh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Eph. 6:11-12). Do you encourage? I sat in one of those comfy chairs in the mall; the kind they put there for Dads when they're sent out of the clothing store for asking, "What about this?" for the hundredth time. And so I sat watching people go by. One family had a toddler who was just catching on to walking. She would take a few steps, her face lighting up with the biggest, prettiest smile you've ever seen, and then all of a sudden, she lost her balance and sat down. Her family encouraged to get up and try again, which she did; her smile resplendent once more. After a few more steps, she'd plop down, then stand up and give it another go. She spent just about as much time on the fl oor as she did walk- ing. But with her family's encouragement, she kept trying. They knew that one day she would walk without falling. Today, someone around you is going to fall, make a mis- take; blow it. Avoid criticizing them. Instead encourage them, believing that one day they will get it right. Work Positive and Live Positive by encouraging someone today.
