Items such as: fur- niture, boxes, mattresses, and bagged clothes, etc., will be picked up from the curbside. Please do not mix these items with limbs, leaves, or grass or place any items in the street. Please note: The Solid Waste Division is unable to pick-up items such as: electronics, appliances, tires, building materials, paints, oils, and batteries, these items may be taken to the Cleveland County Landfi ll. Bulky Items will be picked up only on the day your garbage is scheduled for pick up. Items placed or left on the curb after October 20th will be subject to citations and fi nes. There will be no brush collection during bulky item pick up week. The recycling program is scheduled to begin January 2012. Life Enrichment Dementia Caregiver Meeting What Do They See? Looking Through the Eyes of Dementia? If you wonder what is behind the behaviors associated with dementia, Chrisite Ray will answer some of those questions when she presents a program called "What do they see? Looking Through the Eyes of Dementia" at the next family caregiver meeting at Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care Tuesday, Oct. 18. In a vivid, action-packed presentation, Mrs. Ray, of Home Instead, will explain how the world looks to someone with demen- tia symptoms. The caregiver meeting, which meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m., is open to anyone and is free of charge. Life Enrichment is located at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd. in Shelby (between Teddy and Meekins law office and Cornerstone Dental Associates.) A free sitter service is available for the person diagnosed with dementia, but a reservation must be made by Oct. 11 by calling 704.484.0405. Lost Playwrights Of Western NC Lost Playwrights of Western North Carolina will meet in Rutherfordton, N.C. on Saturday, October 22nd, from 2:30 to 4:30 PM at the Rutherford County Annex on North Main Street ( This is the building where the County Commissioners meet.) All persons interested in any aspect of writing or theatre are encouraged to attend. Gaston Quilters Guild The Gaston Quilters' Guild will meet Monday, October 24th at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are held at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1101 N. Main St. in Lowell, NC. Our meetings are open to all quilters - beginners to experienced. This next program is all about Hawaii; quilts and history of quilting. The November 28th program is holiday potluck and games. Lions Club/Boys And Girls Club Peace Poster Contest Lions Clubs International and The Shelby Lions Club , in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland County, is sponsoring a Peace Poster Contest for children ages 11, 12, and 13. The theme is "Children Know Peace." The posters will be turned in to the Boys and Girls Clubs and judged by a committee from the Lions Club. The local Lions will give the local winner a certifi cate and a fi fty dollar prize, and he or she will attend November 8th Shelby Lions Club meeting with par- ents. The poster will advance to higher levels of competition. The international winner will receive fi ve thousand dollars and a trip to the United Nations. Entries should be turned in before November 1st. Kids Around Before And After School Care The Kidz Around Program for Cleveland County Schools is a school- age child care service designed especially to meet the needs of families with children in the Cleveland County Schools. It is a non-profit pro- gram and receives no governmental funding. The program is designed to provide supervised care for children in grades K-Intermediate on site or a short bus ride to another site. The Cleveland County School System is committed to providing for the total development of each child and to providing all students with the best possible educational program. After School Care is a recreational program. Activities include active games, arts and crafts, music, movies, homework time and free time during which children may choose selected activities. Staff: Experienced dedicated staff maintains a safe nurturing environment where children come first. All staff are CPR and first aid certified. Fees: After School: $35.00 per week if picked up by 4:30 p.m.; $40.00 per week if picked up by 6:00p.m; $30.00 per week: additional children from the same family if picked up by 4:30 p.m.; $35.00 per week: additional children from the same family if picked up by 6:00 p.m. Before School: $2.00 per day per child if enrolled in After School Care. $3.00 per day per child if not enrolled in After School Care. There will be a $10 additional charge per child for all-day care. A $30.00 registra- tion fee is required for each child and is NON-REFUNDABLE.
