Jim is co-chairman of the local committee that brought the American Legion World Series back to Shelby. On Friday, August 12th the American Legion World Series returns to Shelby. On the campus of Shelby High School, Keeter Stadium is getting its last minute preparations for the big event, that will be held August 12th through the 16th. Over two million dollars have been invested in dou- bling the capacity of the stadium and improving Veterans Field. The capacity has been increased to 6,000 seats. Surrounding the stadium, new fl ag poles will display the fl ags from all fi fty states. A new brick American Legion Headquarters building has been built overlooking the fi rst base line. The canopies over the seats have been extended and a new state of the art scoreboard has been installed in right fi eld. To accommodate ESPN, 600,000 candle power lighting is being installed. The dugouts are 30 inches below ground level, are seventy feet long, and have their own restrooms. Co-Chairman, Jim Horn said: in 2008 there was an eight million dollar economic impact on the area, when the last Series was held here. He expects the same or better results, even though this year the series is here fi ve days as opposed to 2008’s two weeks. The committee has a bid in to make Shelby a permanent home for the American Legion World Series. By all indications, with intricate planning and the upgrade of the facility, you have to think it’s very possible! – M. A. Andrews Kathie Burgin Would Have Been Proud! Kathie Burgin, the award winning Shelby High School Drama Director passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at the age of 59. The Children’s Workshop at Shelby High School, has been renamed The Kathie Burgin Children’s Work- shop, in her honor. The workshop presented its fi rst program on July 29th and 30th at Malcom Brown Auditorium. The new director, Jenny Gordon, thanked everyone for their warm wel- come and support as she entered her fi rst year at Shelby, and explained that the choice of “Winnie The Pooh” was selected prior to any knowledge that it was to return to movie theaters this year. Prior to the performance, a special tribute presentation was shown about Kathie Burgin who directed the drama department since 1988. Under her direction, it became one the best high school drama departments in the state. Pictured right are some of those who made the production special. Winnie the Pooh was played by Galaxy Lineberger and Christopher (on Pooh’s right) was portrayed by Chandler Champion. The selection of “Win- nie The Pooh”, like Kathie Burgin, was loveable, laughable, and memorable. –M. A.
