Award winner for Shelby High School. The A.C.E. Award recognizes high school seniors that have Accepted the Challenge of Excellence. A.C.E. Award winners have overcome a personal or physical adversity that could have been used as an excuse to fail, but instead the student chose to work hard and succeed. The students spoke to the Club about their experiences and what motivated them to excel even in difficult and discour- aging circumstances. The Exchange Club presented each student with a certificate of recognition and $200. The A.C.E. Award is a program of the National Exchange Club. Time For A Change? I received an email today from Scholastic Book Club. It said, “Don’t make a move without us!” As a teacher, I have an account there, and they want to make sure I let them know if I change schools or grade levels so they can keep their records up to date. As it turns out, I’m not changing either of those this year, but I am changing classrooms. In fact, as I prepare for my ninth year of teaching, I’ll be moving into my seventh classroom. It would have suited me to have remained in the same room year after year, but I must admit that moving has helped me stay organized and forced me to look at things with fresh eyes. I’ve found that this is often the way with change. It may be necessary and even beneficial, but it’s not usually something I enjoy! I’m not alone. As a kindergarten teacher, I observe both parents and children experiencing the discomfort that often accompanies change. It’s not uncommon for the little ones to cry, but they aren’t the only ones. For years, our school held a “Boo-hoo Breakfast” on the first day of class. It was a time for parents of kindergarteners to console each other as they faced the fact that their babies were growing up. I can sympathize with both the parents and the kids. One of my earliest memories is of crying every morning in kindergarten because I wanted to be at home with my mother. I also cried when each of my kids started school. The year my oldest began her senior year, my son started high school, and my youngest started kindergarten, I could have used a Boo-hoo breakfast, lunch, and dinner-for about a week! One of the worst things about change is the fact that it generally requires some decision making, and I can be very indecisive. I can see every side of a situation, and I worry that I may not make the best choice. It would be so much easier if things just stayed the same! The Bible tells the story of a young woman who faces a huge change in her life and has to make a decision that could affect not only herself but her entire race. Esther, a Jewish girl being raised by her uncle, Mordecai, is taken to live at the palace as part of the king’s harem. Things seem to be going well for Esther when she is chosen as the new queen, but later she is faced with a very difficult deci- sion- one which could save her race, but could also result in her death. When she hesitates, Mordecai suggests that perhaps the opportunity to save the Jews was the very reason she was made queen. Esther considers this and decides to do what she feels is right, even though the consequences could be dire. As a result of her decision, the Jewish nation is saved from destruction. An interesting thing about the book of Esther is that God is not referred to throughout the entire book, but His hand is seen clearly in all that happens. The story of Esther reminds me that, while I may not always feel God’s clear direction, I can trust that He is always with me and will ultimately use the circumstances of my life for good. I wonder if, as I agonize over decisions, He may be waiting for me to have the courage to move out of my comfort zone and, based on His Word, simply do what I think is best. Psalm 139:8 says, “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” What a comforting thought! Unlike Scholastic’s “Don’t make a move without me!” message, it seems to me that our Heavenly Father’s message might be more like, “Relax, you can’t make a move without me.” We may not like change but, if we trust God, we can have peace because He promises to be with us through all the seasons of our lives- His love for us will never change!
