Clothe-a-Child raising funds The Ministerial Fellowship of Pike County is seeking donations to fund their annual Clothe-a-Child project. They are hoping to raise enough money to purchase $125 worth of warm winter clothing per child for less fortunate children in Pike County. "I understand how quickly things can turn for a family. Christmas and winter comes up and kids need winter clothes. How awesome it is when people chip in and help out. I'm proud to be a part of it," said Petersburg First Church of God Pastor Josh Bowers, who is chairing the event this year. "I also want to express thanks to those who have supported it and are considering supporting it," said Bowers. They will be taking children shopping on December 12 and 13. The Press-Dispatch Commissioners open bids for materials and supplies By Andy Heuring The Pike County Commissioners opened material and supply bids for 2014 and established a employee sick bank during their Monday night meeting. Pike County Sheriff Jeremy Britton, at the previous meeting, requested the county establish a sick day bank. One of his employees had a child suffer a serious injury and his parents are required to stay with him. The commissioners approved the sick day bank by a 3-0 vote. County employees are able to become members by donating one day to the bank each year. Because it is starting near the end of the calendar year, they added a clause allowing employees to donate a day and then on January 1, 2014, donate a day if they have already used all of their sick days. It was also made retroactive to October 1, 2013. The commissioners opened bids for materials and supplies, including pipe culverts and bituminous materials. The county received bids from Metal Culverts Inc., CPI Supply and Southern Indiana Supply for culverts and Cave Quarries, of Otwell, JH Rudolph, of St. Croix, and Dave O'Mara, of Washington, on paving materials. All the bids were taken under advisement. Rock bids were rejected due to mistakes in the requirements advertised. He said, "They are adamant that the library can not afford it and those in favor of it are adamant that they can afford it." No action was taken by the commissioners on Behme's request. History teacher Chris Hadley said the idea for a trip to New York stemmed from last year when a group of students went to Washington D.C. for the inauguration of President Obama. "I put together the trip to Washington D.C. , I talked to the history department, and we thought if everything went well with the Washington D.C. trip, we would try to do a trip every two years," said Hadley. The trip went great so he said they decided to try a trip to New York and Philadelphia. "The inauguration is only once every four years so we thought we would do a trip somewhere outside Washington D.C.," said Hadley. Hadley said what really solidified his desire to take kids every two years on a trip was what he witnessed on the Washington D.C. trip. "We were at an Iwo Jima Memorial and a course guide was reading a speech. I looked over and saw six or seven kids with tears streaming down their faces. We teach kids about Iwo Jima, but we just can't give them that experience," said Hadley. He said another factor is for some kids it may be the only opportunity they get to travel. "Last year, we had a student who had never been out of Pike County. Not to Evansville, not to Washington and because of the trip, she got to go to Washington D.C." While the trip has been organized by the History Department and is aimed at students who will be juniors or seniors in 2014-15 school year, it is not a school sponsored trip. It is being coordinated through World Strides. Hadley explained World Strides will have "course guides" going to each site they visit. They all have history degrees and tell the students about the history of that particular site. "This is not a vacation. This is an education based trip, where kids will be able to experience historic sites first hand," said Hadley. Some of the sites on the itinerary include: Empire State Building, 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, a Broadway play, Chinatown, Little Italy, Yankee Stadium, Rockefeller Center and the NBC studios. They will also walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. In Philadelphia, they will visit Independence Hall, where the U.S. Constitution was written, Valley Forge, the Liberty Bell and the steps Rocky Balboa, from the "Rocky" movies, ran up and down while training. The trip has an all inclusive price of $1,249. Kids will be doing individual fundraising and they will be doing group fundraising. Hadley said all the funds raised will go to the students and not to any of the adults, teachers or parents. The trip is being planned for Fall Break of 2014. 285 HP V6 available introducing the all new 2014 GMC Sierra 1/2 Ton PiCkuP The most quiet and safest Sierra ever! 1,000 + $1,000 + $1,000 owner Loyalty customer Trade-in $ bonus cash cash bonus cash See iT now aT 1050 Wernsing road, Jasper 812-482-5141 or Toll Free: 1-800-686-1444 Hours: M-F 9am-8pm; Sat 8am-4pm See our entire inventory at www.BobLuegers.com BoB Luegers BUICK • GMC Find us on Facebook A Nice Place to Do Business!
