Wednesday, November 20, 2013 C-1 Church notes Opinion Letters to the editor Files OUT of the past Petersburg Community Thanksgiving Service set for Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Nazarene Church The annual Petersburg Community Thanksgiving service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 26 at the Petersburg Church of the Nazarene on Pike Ave. The featured speaker is Josh Bowers of the Petersburg First Church of God. Bowers has been at First Church of God since May. He is a graduate of MidAmerica Christian Univer- sity and Liberty University. He said his topic will be "Faithful to Serve." Ministers from other churches will also participate in the service. Name change of Winslow Christian G.B. Church The Christian General Baptist Church, of Winslow, Ind., voted to change its name to Grace General Baptist Church on Sunday, Nov. 17. Pastor Les Coomer said, "The old name did not really distinguish our mission. After all, the other General Baptist churches, and indeed churches of other denominations in the community are Christian. We chose to emphasize grace— the love of God that we cannot earn—the love given through Jesus that allows us to be Christians, as our point of identity." PLEASANT RIDGE G.B. CHURCH Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10:30 a.m.; evening song service 6:30 p.m. Everyone is always welcome. We want to thank God for His mercy, love and answered prayer. Continue to pray for one another, the unsaved, the prayer list, for all who are traveling, for the sick and needy, for the ones in hospitals and nursing homes, for the military and their families, our President and his family, and all decisions that are made. We need to pray for our country and for the storm victims from last weekend. We want to extend our sympathy to anyone who has lost a loved one. Make God first priority in your life. Anything that is more important than God is an idol. "For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens" (Psalm 96:5). "Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods; I am the Lord your God" (Leviticus 19:4). "For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous is a jealous God" (Exodus 34:14). "And Jesus answered and said to him, 'Get behind me, Satan!' For it is written, You shall worship the lord your God and Him only you shall serve" (Luke 4:8). Remember: Obedience always brings blessings. God wants us to always walk in the pathway of righteousness. Thought: When life becomes more than you can stand...kneel! Have a great week. Dale Frederick, Pastor Lois K. Fowler, Reporter oakland city full gospel 124 West Washington Sunday services 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Oakland City time). Sunday evening guest speakers are: Jerry Wright on Nov. 24 and Ed Hall on Dec. 1. How do we make a window of opportunity to testify? Pastor had an excellent way. Tell someone you've been adopted. Once they get over the confused look, explain you have been adopted into the family of God. Then ask, "have you been adopted yet?" It's by His blood that our adoption papers are signed. Once signed, the relationship begins. Once the relationship is sealed by your love for Him, you have a legal right to His inheritance for you. His love and an inheritance too. Now that's a win, win opportunity. Have a blessed Thanksgiving, by realizing how blessed you are! Henry W. Nelson, Pastor Elaine W. They are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22, 23). Larry Barr, Pastor Two Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Paul M. Sadler Be ye reconciled Reconciliation postulates alienation. Only enemies can be reconciled. Thus God's message of reconciliation takes us back to Adam, the father of the human race, who first rebelled against God, and explains why God must deal with us all on the same level, as sinners who need salvation. In Romans 5:12, we read: "…By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." Thank God, though, the message of reconciliation is not concerned exclusively with the "one man" by whom sin entered into the world. Indeed, it is chiefly concerned with the "one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (I Timothy 2:5). "Therefore as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men unto condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one, the free gift [of salvation] came upon all men to justification of life. "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous" (Romans 5:18, 19). It is by this other "one Man" and His death on Calvary, then, that sinners may be reconciled to a holy God. In Colossians 1:21, 22, Paul, the Apostle of reconciliation, writes to believers: "And you, that were once alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled, "In the body of His flesh, through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight." Thus "when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son" (Romans 5:10). And thus, too, the Apostle pleads: "We pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For He hath made Him to be sin for us, [Christ] who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" (II Corinthians 5:20, 21). Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Pornography: The unchallenged evil The Internet has brought a new way of life to banking, education, government church and almost everything we do. With this modern miracle has come the capacity for evil and destruction of body, mind, and spirit. For a few years this immoral sexuality actually seemed to be confined to males. Today, sadly, this has changed as millions of women now search for love and sex through pornography. The evil of sexual compulsive behavior is sweeping our nation like a western forest fire. This addiction is destroying homes and millions live in denial of this addiction. This evil goes everywhere. I have counseled with pastors who allow this sin to walk with them into the pulpit. I recently spoke to a male group on a college campus and most of them told me porn was their worst addiction. Often good women are shocked and distraught when they find where their husbands have been on the Internet. There is anger, emotional problems as they face this social cheat. Our nation is learning about the deceitfulness of sin. Finally they will learn the wages of sin is spiritual death. Ma- ny once good people have found they have been hijacked of their high self-esteem and now struggle with shame and a sexual addiction that wastes hours and eventually destroys the home. Don't allow your husband, when caught, to make you believe he can take care of this alone. First, he must be committed to absolute honesty. Few will ever break this cruel vise of evil without God's help and the long term therapy with a good, highly trained, counselor. Always be aware that lying is easy for those who have spent hours in this fantasy world of darkness. Parents need to know what their children are watching and being taught in school. Many do not know that porn is a common source of sex education. Parents need to know the high price college education may include a nude or sex week on campus.
