After Wilson hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Spartans a 16-14 lead, Abbott sank three of four tries from the foul line as Pike Central vaulted ahead 17-16. A basket by junior forward/center Courtney Copp put South Knox back ahead 18-17 with 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter. After Copp hit one of two free throws to give the Lady Spartans a 19-17 lead, Abbott scored off an assist from Whitehead to tie the score at 19-19 with 12 seconds left. South Knox, however, would take a 20-19 lead into halftime as Copp hit the second of two free throw attempts with 2.7 seconds remaining. During the first half, the Lady Spartans made just four of 22 field goal attempts, an 18 percent average, while sinking 12 of 22 tries from the free throw line. "We wanted to get to the line more, and it was the complete opposite," said Graham, whose team made eight of 14 free throws in the first half. "We put them on the line and kept them in the game." Pike Central committed 15 fouls in the first half, including three each by Halbrader, Nixon and junior forward Lindsey Catt. "The kids played really hard, but I felt like they tried too hard to make something happen," Graham said. "We wanted to mix some things up defensively, and when we fouled as much as we did, it limited us defensively. It took some of that part of the game out for us, so it changed a lot of things." Baskets by junior guard/forward Alyssa Wolters and Copp, sandwiched around a free throw by Howes, extended South Knox's lead to 24-20 with 5:48 left in the third period. After Howes hit a three-pointer to pull Pike Central to within 24-23, Wilson scored on a lay-up to give the Lady Spartans a 26-23 advantage with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Chargers, however, rallied, tying the game on a threepointer by Whitehead off an assist by Abbott with 3:39 left in the period. Pike Central junior Lindsey Catt (23) eyes the basket while South Knox senior Lauren Kirk (right) defends during high school girls' basketball action. Ed Cahill photo. Following a steal by Abbott, Catt hit one of two free throws to give Pike Central a 27-26 lead. Then, following another South Knox turnover, Richardson hit a jumper from the corner to extend the Lady Chargers' advantage to 29-26. The lead proved short lived, however, as Lady Spartan senior forward Delaney McDowell hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 2929 with 1:16 left in the third quarter. After Halbrader misfired on a pair of free throw attempts late in the third period, South Knox took the lead on a basket by Kirk with 6:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. A free throw by Nixon pulled Pike Central to within 31-30 with 5:19 left before back-to-back baskets by Kirk and Wolters stretched the Lady Spartans' lead to 35-30. After Abbott made one of two free throws to cut South Knox's lead to 35 -31, Hatton nailed a three-pointer to give the Lady Spartans a 38-31 advantage with 3:19 remaining in the game. A basket by Howes pulled the Lady Chargers to within 38-33, but South Knox, on two free throws each by Kirk and Copp, extended its lead to 42-33 with 1:23 left. After Catt scored on a put-back of a miss by Richardson with 1:11 remaining, the Lady Spartans hit three of four free throws to finish off the scoring. South Knox made five of its final seven field goal attempts, including two three-pointers in as many tries, and sank seven of 11 shots from the free throw line while outscoring Pike Central 19-6 to rally for the 10-point win. The Lady Chargers, meanwhile, made just two of their final 16 field goal attempts, including nine misses from beyond the three-point arc, and just two of 10 free throws. "We missed some key free throws there," Graham said. "There were some opportunities there that we could have extended our lead, kind of taken a little bit of control, but we could never get more than a possession away." "We just wore down mentally, I think, a little bit, just with all the frustration," Graham added. Some of that's just being the youthful part of our team, but we just have to play smarter. Catt, Nixon and Richardson tossed in three points apiece while Halbrader scored one point. Catt grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while Whitehead, who dished out a game-high three assists, had seven rebounds. South Knox was led in scoring by Copp and Kirk, who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Kirk had a game-high 13 rebounds while Copp grabbed 11 as the Lady Spartans out-rebounded the Lady Chargers 36-24. In the junior varsity contest, sophomores Katie Nash and Mallory Butler scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, as South Knox defeated Pike Central 42-15. Junior guard Amanda Cook scored six points to lead the Lady Chargers. Pike Central, which hosted Vincennes Lincoln on Tuesday, Nov. 19, will travel to Wood Memorial on Friday, Nov. 22, before returning home to take on Tell City on Tuesday, Nov. 26. "Now we can just start tweaking on some things that we've seen here tonight," Graham said. "We've got to score a little bit more than we did tonight. Of course, hitting free throws would make a difference." "Our fouling and our lack of converting on the free throws were really hard on us, and when we drive the lane, we've got to look to try to finish a little bit more," Graham added. "Sometimes we drive passively, looking to pass, and we want to be able to get to the line. So we need to be a little more aggressive there."
