Before you decide where to hunt and how you are going to set up to hunt, be sure and determine the wind direction and velocity. Remember that ducks always land into the wind so try to always keep the wind at your back. If the wind is dead calm the duck hunting is going to be tough. If the wind is on the calm side some species of ducks will congregate in open areas. If the wind is really howling it will cause the open water ducks to break up and seek water that is protected from the wind. The wind can also be your friend because it gives your decoy spread movement making them look more realistic. Wind can also disguise your movements and help cover up your duck calling mistakes.
