Age 10 is the highest age that can pull. He has won first place in his division every year since he was 3, except for two years ago because he did not attend the pull. The Belwood Kiddie Pull happens every year on Saturday after- noon of the Belwood Antique Tractor Pull. The kiddie sled was put into operation 18 years ago after Kenny Warlick, Yates Warlick (his father) and a friend, Alan Lattimore, built the sled. London Warlick, Kenny’s son, pulled the sled the first year and every year after until he became too old. After he became too old, he started pulling the real tractors. The sled works by the puller pedaling the tractor then as they pedal a basket pulls up the sled to add weight which makes it more difficult to pull. Each age division has different amount of bricks added to the basket as the ages increase. Children are generally given a prize or ribbon in recognition of their participation. This event is enjoyed by all who participate or spectate. For several years there were around 60 partici- pants. This year’s recipients are Lauren Hensley and Kelsey Brittain. Lauren Hensley is the daughter of James and Carmen Hensley of Grover, North Carolina. She is a 2010 graduate of Blacksburg High School, where she was an honor roll student. At Blacksburg High, Lauren was also a member of the History Club and Drama Club. She was a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, served as a Teacher Cadet, and was in Chorus. Lauren also volunteered for the Junior Miss organization, Operation Christmas Child, Iron City Ministries, and Grover Fire Department fundrais- ing efforts. She is a 2010 gradu- ate of Shelby High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club. She was also an NC Scholar and a Junior Marshall. Currently, she is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Cleveland Community College. She plans to pursue her BSN at Gardner-Webb University after graduating from CCC in the spring of 2012. Recipients of the $5,000 scholarship are selected by the SECU scholarship committee and exemplify the member- ship philosophy of credit unions, and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement.
