From the Hickory Nut Gorge, Chimney Rock Village, Lake Lure, to Bostic and Golden Valley's Yogi Bear campground, to downtowns we all are invited to take in the bright lights of the most wonderful time of the year. As a child it was one of our family traditions, and maybe yours too, to "go see the Christmas lights." We didn't "keep a calendar" back then, but we always knew one night was for riding around to see the Christmas decorations. My three sisters and I crowded into the backseat of our car while Daddy drove us around and Mama was the navigator. Back then, and it has been a long time, lights were strung across downtown streets, on trees and other Christmas decor in towns. Sometimes we might venture off the beaten path into a housing development to see even more lights. Imagine the child today taking in all the lights of the city and the country. The municipalities of Ellenboro, Bostic, Ruth, Chimney Rock Village, Lake Lure, Rutherfordton, Spindale and Forest City all spend a lot of money and time making sure their respective towns draw people to them. There's something about strolling through a downtown area decorated with Christmas lights. Across the county line is the Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland Drive-Thru Light Show at the Tryon International Equestrian Center, featuring hundreds of thousands of lights dancing to the tunes of holiday music on car radio. Tickets are available online and are sold per carload. So load up a car and go see something spectacular. It is worth it. I learned this week about an elementary school that takes its families downtown Forest City just to see the Christmas lights. While it may seem unlikely that folks wouldn't be able to do that on their own, but trust me some can't. The ride through downtown is part of a fundraiser at the school the same evening that includes other activities for families at the school house. It seems to me we are all busy people with a lot of "stuff" to do and sometimes we don't often slow down enough to enjoy the simply things of this season. So maybe in the next few weeks, we can take a little more time with family and friends and "go see the lights." It's a family tradition and it's a friend tradition, too. There's something about Christmas lights that creates, even if it's just for an evening or so, a peace that is not always recognized. Let's go see the lights.
