Thursday, November 9-November 15, 2023 www.shelbyinfo.com 704/484-1047 - shelby shopper & info - Page 7 Imagine with me for a moment that before you start your car or truck each morning to go to work or school or wherever else you're going that you put six grains of sand in your gas tank. That's right, six grains of sand in your gas tank. Okay, it's only six grains of sand, but if you do it every morning, how long do you think it'll take before your vehicle won't run? Soon, right? That great engine would be a mess, unable to do what it was designed to do. Negative, unpleasant thoughts dropped into your mind affect you in the same way. They break down your mental motor. You're broken down by worry, frustration, and feelings like you don't matter to anyone. Pretty soon, you're broken down beside life's highway and you can't go on. The next time you're worried, frustrated, or imagine you don't matter to anyone, drop your negativity like a handful of sand. Instead, put this positive thought in its place; say to yourself, "I am the only me there is on earth so I choose to be the best me I can be." Then listen to your life so you can make a positive life, not just a living. LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette How's your car running? Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Ser- vice has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning per- mits for Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Graham, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Mc- Dowell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain and Transylvania counties effective 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, until fur- ther notice. "Several counties in Western North Carolina are in a severe drought, and we are seeing wildfire activity increase due to dry conditions. Because dry conditions are expected to continue, this burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly. Our top priority is always to protect lives, property, and forestland across the state," said Agricul- ture Commissioner Steve Troxler. "Even though not all areas of North Carolina fall under the burn ban, we do encourage extreme caution with any burning as conditions are dry in many areas of the state. We will continue to assess conditions in the coming weeks to determine if we need to expand the burn ban." Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the af- fected counties, regard- less of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire. Local fire departments and law enforcement offi- cers are assisting the N.C. Forest Service in enforc- ing the burn ban. The N.C. Forest Ser- vice will continue to moni- tor conditions. Residents with questions regard- ing a specific county can contact their N.C. Forest Service county ranger or their county fire marshal's office. Open burning includes burning leaves, branches, or other plant material. In all cases, burning trash, lumber, tires, newspa- pers, plastics, or other nonvegetative material is illegal. Campfires and bonfires are not allowed. You can still use your grill or barbecue where local ordinances allow. Burn ban issued for Cleveland and Gaston Counties (Ed.
