Page 8 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, June 29-July 5, 2023 Why is it that to take a week of vacation, you have to do two weeks of work before you leave and two weeks of work when you return? You're ListentoLife.org LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette only gone a week! Does the work multiply while you're gone? This reality can produce a certain amount of guilt about vacation times. For instance, let's say you go to the beach, pick up a seashell, and put it up to your ear. Do you hear the soothing tides of the ocean gently rolling in on the shore? Or do you hear, "So you thought you'd get away from work for a week, did you? Don't you feel guilty? Just think of all the work you're missing. That associate could be moving up to take your place, you know..." When making a living interrupts your making a life, when work intrudes on recreation, remember that the word "recreation" comes from two words meaning, "to create again." Your vacation is a time to re-create your spirit, your family relationships, and your passion for life. So listen to your life today and focus on all of who you are on making a positive life, not just a living. Enjoy your vacation! How's your vacation? Fish for Free in North Carolina's Public Waters on July 4 On July 4, anyone in North Carolina, regardless of age, can enjoy one of the state's best outdoor activities for free. Free Fishing Day, which runs from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., offers residents and out-of-state visitors the opportunity to fi sh without having to purchase a li- cense; however, all other fi shing regulations apply, such as length and daily possession limits, as well as bait and tackle restrictions. Authorized by the N.C. General Assembly in 1994 and spon- sored by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, North Car- olina's annual free fi shing day, which always falls on July 4, was created to promote the sport of fi shing. "Free Fishing Day is a great opportunity for families to en- joy some quality time together on the water," said Christian Waters, the agency's chief of the Inland Fisheries Division. "Fishing is relatively inexpensive activity that anyone, no mat- ter what their age or skill level, can enjoy." To give anglers a better chance of catching fi sh, the Com- mission stocks a variety of fi sh in waters across the state — including trout and channel catfi sh. The agency also provides access to fi shing sites across the state, including public fi shing areas and boating access areas. The interactive fi shing and boating maps on the Commission's website list more than 500 fi shing and boating areas, many of which are free, that are open to the public. Many of the boating areas likely will be crowded over the busy holiday weekend, so the Commission urges boaters to be patient, courteous and follow the boating etiquette tips be- low: Be patient and remain calm until an open parking space is available. Wait your turn in the launch line. Get in line without blocking or cutting off others. Park your vehicle and trailer while someone moves the boat away from the ramp. Recruit someone to move the boat away from the ramp while you retrieve your vehicle and trailer. Observe no-wake zones and be cautious. While anyone can fi sh for free on July 4, a fi shing license is required for people ages 16 and older on all other days of the year for both inland and coastal waters in North Carolina. Purchasing a license online is quick and easy. Other ways to purchase a license are: Call the Commission at 888-248-6834. Current hours of op- eration are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Visit a local Wildlife Service Agent. For more information on fi shing in public, inland waters, visit the Fishing page.
