(Photos by Cleveland County Schools) Included on the tour was a farm that produces meat and milk products. Students had the opportunity to see heavy farm equipment during the weeklong hands-on camp. County Extension Di- rector and Agricultural Agent Greg Traywick shared that NC State Extension partnered with Cleveland County Schools vocational agri- culture instructors to pro- vide a weeklong hands-on camp that exposed rising 7th through 12th graders to career opportunities in agriculture and agribusi- ness. Nearly 40 students participated in the camp during June 12-16, 2023. Funding for the camp, including bus transpor- tation and meals, was provided by the Career & Technical Education Department of Cleveland County Schools in con- junction with their REVup Summer Careers Experi- ence, which immersed other students in career exploration in the health care, technology, skilled trades, and public ser- vices fields. The agriculture camp featured tours of the Tryon International Equestrian Center, Wells, Jenkins & Wells (meat processing facility), Greene Fam- ily Farm (farmers market produce, meat and milk producer), Cleveland County Livestock Ex- change (livestock auction facility), Cline's Nursery (ornamental plant pro- duction and sales), ASR Grain Company (row crop farming and grain mar- keting services), Wilson Farms of Shelby (small grain production and straw bale manufactur- ing), Shelby Corn Maze (agritourism venue), Case Farms (commercial broiler houses), Willis Farm of Belwood (sorghum syrup, corn and grits manufac- turing), Toluca Grain and Hay (hay & straw repro- cessing), Knob Creek Orchards (commercial blackberries, strawber- ries, peaches, apples and pears), Parker Family Feed Company (farm sup- ply and feed dealer), Bell's Dairy (commercial dairy operation with a new ro- botic milker), Martin Cha- rolais (beef production), Lewis Farms (assorted fresh produce grower), and Newgrass Brewing Company (value-added food manufacturer). Stu- dents also heard presen- tations about beekeeping and the animal science program at Cleveland Community College.
