The College had 619 graduates this year and awarded 894 credentials, making this the largest graduating class in the College's history. Among the graduates were 41 students from Cleveland Early College High School earning 53 credentials, and 146 Career and College Promise students earning 155 credentials. The ceremony was held in the James B. Petty Amphi- theater, named for the Col- lege's fi rst president. During his opening remarks, Pres- ident Dr. Jason Hurst told graduates, "Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in your life." He continued by stating that some graduates in the audience may be the fi rst in their families to graduate from college, while others may have returned to col- lege after spending years in the workforce. "Whatever your story, I commend you for taking the initiative to pursue your education and better yourself." During the ceremony, Dr. Hurst recognized the grad- uates who maintained a 4.0 GPA, reading their names and asking them to stand and be recognized. He also announced the 2023 Ac- ademic Excellence Award Winner, Michael Parnell, and presented him with a plaque and medallion to commem- orate his accomplishment. Parnell is a deputy fi re mar- shal in Caldwell County. He is graduating with a 4.0 GPA and his Associate in Applied Science in Fire Protection Technology. The guest speaker for the night was North Caro- lina State Treasurer Dale Folwell. Elected to his fi rst term as State Treasurer in 2016, Folwell was reelected in 2020 and is serving his second term. His message to the graduates was to work hard and keep mov- ing forward. He challenged the graduates to "focus on integrity, ability and passion" and to be the ones to raise their hands when the world asks for volunteers to do the toughest jobs. He also told the group to be sure and thank those who have supported and encouraged them through their educa- tional journey. Someday, he said, "You'll be looking back and realize you are standing on the shoulders of those who went before you." Submitted by Paula B. Photo provided Do you know someone who grumbles? ListentoLife.org LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette There once was a farmer who was an incurable grumbler. Hiram grumbled about everything all the time. He was never satisfi ed. One fall, he had the best apple crop for miles around. The apples were plentiful. There was a bumper crop. And there were hardly any bugs on them. You just couldn't ask for a better apple crop than the one Hiram had that year. Well, one of his neighbors stopped by to congratulate him, saying, "Well, Hiram, you sure ought to be happy now. This is the fi nest crop of apples ever raised in this county." Hiram shuffl ed his feet, grunted and then grumbled, "Well, I s'pose they'll do. But where's the rotten ones for the hogs?" Some of us just have to grumble no matter how great things are around us, don't we? So I guess living positive isn't a matter of how great life is, but how we choose to respond to it—grumbling or grateful. Avoid grumbling like an Eeyore Vampire. Instead remember you receive your Live Positive lifestyle and say, "Thank you" as you make a life worth living.
