He presented his research fi nd- ings at the NC Space Grant Symposium in Raleigh on April 21. Pasour's goal with his research was to "determine the vi- ability of using living components in an air fi ltration system." The system would be used in space to remove carbon dioxide from an atmosphere to make it breathable or to at least take a load off the existing electrolysis systems so that they can work more effi ciently. With the help of machining instructor Brian Summey, Pasour designed, drew and assembled a container for his air fi ltration system. Once the components of the experiment were set up, Pasour made observations over the course of several weeks. At the conclusion of the experiment, he created a poster to display his fi ndings. Unfortunately, the results were not prom- ising, but Pasour enjoyed the experience anyway. Pasour is graduating in May with an Associate in Applied Science in Mechanical Drafting Technology. "My dream job would be to play around in a room with 3D printers all day," said Pasour, "or go to a four-year and become an aerospace engineer. Either way, it seems like a great career path to go down." About the North Carolina Space Grant The NC Space Grant is a NASA-funded program that seeks to engage students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Each year, the program competitively awards grants to students for the purpose of conducting research projects that support NASA's Mission Directorates.. Submitted by Paula B. Vess John Pasour, a machining student at CCC, was awarded a NC Space Grant. He constructed and conducted an experiment relat- ed to using microorganisms in an air fi ltration system. He attend- ed the NC Space Grant Symposium in Raleigh on April 21. Division of Motor Vehicles is announc- ing changes to the graduated driver licensing (GDL) pro- gram for teens. Effective May 8, teen driv- ers will again need to have their Level 1 Limited Learner Permit for six months before being able to get their Level 2 Limited Provisional License. Teen drivers will still be re- quired to be at least 16 years old, log 60 hours of driving time, pass a road test and show printed proof of insur- ance in the teen driver's name. The requirement to ad- vance to Level 2 had been 12 months for most of the last 25 years since the GDL system was put into place in 1997. During the COVID- 19 pandemic, the legislature temporarily shortened this re- quirement to six months. That provision lapsed at the end of 2022, leaving thousands of teen drivers and their families in limbo. "Now that this require- ment has been changed back to six months, we look forward to helping these teen drivers through this process," said DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin. "We ask for your patience as we work to ac- commodate the thousands of teen drivers that are suddenly eligible to take a road test and receive their Level 2 provi- sional license." According to the new legis- lation, this six-month provision will again lapse at the end of the year. Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, the provision will perma- nently change to nine months. Another change to the GDL system will allow Level 2 per- mit holders to be able to drive one passenger under 21 that is not a family member, if they are being driven directly to or from school. This is in addition to the existing provision allow- ing one passenger under 21 that is a family member. NCDMV schedule changes went into effect on May 1. After noon, all customer services statewide are now provided on a walk-in basis. Appointments are only available in the morn- ing through the 11 a.m. hour and can be booked at skipthe- line.ncdot.gov. Road tests, which a teen driver must successfully pass to achieve a Level 2 permit, are not available after 4 p.m. Teen driver law changes effective May 8 New Edition Every Thursday!
