Breazeale will talk to students, faculty, and staff on Thursday, April 6, at noon in the Library Auditorium. The event is also open to the public at no charge. Breazeale is a small- town girl who grew up in a trailer park in Marshville. After leaving home at 17 and with a failed attempt at affording college, she lived out of the trunk of her car as she worked her way through several positions at a bank into an industry entirely new for women, which led to her being one of the fi rst females in outside industrial sales. Five years later, she started her own company because she felt she had what the other companies didn't - heart and passion. She created a sustainable business model and developed long-term relationships worldwide. Breazeale sold her industrial fastener company in 2019 and is looking forward to sharing the lessons she obtained throughout her life as a successful entrepreneur and learning how to rise above adversity to thrive in a manner that she calls "Victory… In Time." For more information on the program, contact Saundra Clay at 828-395- 1576 or sclay@isothermal. edu. Speaker will talk about adversity, opportunity Article Provided By: Jean Gordon Renee Breazeale We have some exciting news about the wild side of our staff. Meet the newest member of our animal ambassador team, Valentine the Virginia Opossum! Valentine joined us in February after spending time at Lees McRae's May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Valentine was brought to rehab last summer after her mother was hit by a car while Valentine and her siblings were in her pouch. Even after physical therapy, Val was determined to have hind leg deformities that would leave her vulnerable to predators in the wild, so she could not be released. However, she can have a good quality of life in an educational facility like Chimney Rock! Virginia Opossums are a very special species of wildlife in our area. They are North Carolina's state marsupial (and our only native marsupial). Though many people are frightened by them or dislike having them in their yards and neighborhoods, opossums are very important and helpful animals for our ecosystem due to their unique adaptations. Opossums are unlikely to contract rabies due to their low internal body temperature. They are also able to consume snakes, including venomous ones! Opossums eat large numbers of ticks and fi re ants, so think twice before chasing them off. As with all wildlife, our relationship with wild opossums is best when we give them space and let them do their thing. We are very excited to have Valentine on our team. You can visit her at our Animal Discovery Den, or look for her at one of our upcoming Animal Encounters.
