Sports Wednesday, December 21, 2022 The Press-Dispatch B-2 Karan Thacker, AFSP Owner THACKER TAX SERVICE 906 Blackfoot Drive Fort Branch, IN 47648 812-615-0071 (offi ce) 812-789-3852 (cell) kthacker01@gmail.com Slow start dooms Chargers at Boonville, 51-40 By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central got off to a slow start against a strong Boonville team last week and was never able to get going. The Chargers uncharacter- istically were getting beat to loose balls and struggled to hit from the floor as they fell 51-40 to Boonville last Tues- day night. "We did not play well," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. "It was one of those games where everything we did, didn't go our way." Pike Central fell behind early, only scoring six points in the first quarter on threes by Quade Morton and Julian Gish. "I thought on offense we were a little more individual. We didn't shoot it well. Then on defense we didn't play well," said Elliott. Despite those things the Chargers heated up in the second quarter and fought their way back to a 23-18 defi- cit by halftime as both Gish and Morton scored five and Braden Howald added a field goal. Morton and Gish in the third quarter scored all nine points for the Chargers as Boonville put up 13 points including six on three field goals by Lavelle Tinsley, who had a game-high 18 points for Boonville. Boonville's surge gave them a 36 -27 lead head- ing into the fourth quarter. Senior Chase Ridao blew hot in the fourth quarter, hit- ting a three and scoring sev- en points to lead a Charger comeback. "I was disappointed in our performance," said Elliott. Searching for a positive from the night he said, "I guess it is as bad as we played with two minutes to go. We were only down by five and had the ball. We missed a layup then got another opportunity and couldn't take advantage. "We just didn't work hard enough to turn the tide," said Elliott. Boonville scored 15 fourth quarter points and hit five of six free throws to thwart the Chargers' comeback at- tempts. The Pioneers on the night were 10 of 12 from the free throw line and had three players score in double fig- ures. Cooper Aigner had 11 and Jake Fuller had 10 to go with Tinsley's 18. Pike Central was led by Morton with 14 and Gish with 13. "They are pretty solid. It was a great opportunity for us. We just couldn't get it going. When stuff isn't go- ing your way, you can make your own luck getting the 50 - 50 balls, diving on the floor. We weren't doing that. It just wasn't in the cards for us," said Elliott. While the Chargers shot poorly from the floor they were 100 percent from the free-throw line, but they on- ly shot two free-throws. "They were very upset and frustrated. One of our goals was tho win conference. It took us out of the drivers seat. We can still win it but we are going to have to get some help," said Elliott. On the positive side El- liott said, "We have had real- ly good practices since then." Pike Central is now 3-2 on the season. WEATHER CHANGES SCHEDULE Pike Central was sched- uled to be in a one-day tour- ney on Thursday at Evans- ville Memorial, but with a winter storm predicted for Thursday night, the games have been moved up. Whitehead and Keena Young fin- ished with four points each while Kahle Young and Liberty Taylor scored a bas- ket apiece. Delaney Welch was one of two from the line in the second quarter. Lady Charger coach Trey Wornica said the girls "came out with great ener- gy, played hard, continued to battle the whole way through." Coach said the girls kept North Knox to forty points against a high scoring undefeated team that is leading 2A schools.
