A-10 Tuesday, September 6, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Mae's Market celebrates one year By Janice Barniak Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Owner Rella Bush said one year into opening Mae's Mar- ket she's over whelmed by gratitude. "It's gone really well. The community has really sup- ported it. Our neighbors and friends have supported us," she said at the one year cele- bration Saturday. She and husband Gar y Bush are grandparents who last September opened a farm stand with a little something extra — extras like home- made breads, honey and jams. A year ago, the Bushes al- ready grew watermelons and cantaloupe, and had opened a greenhouse to add tomatoes, squash, zucchini and more, before building a place to house the extra produce, and then they decided to sell out of the building they'd built. Gar y Bush had years of ex- perience as a produce manag- er at Schnucks. They recruited their 11 grandchildren, from 8 years old to 21 years old, and their children to work in the market. Her biggest worr y at the outset was whether it would succeed. "We've been able to add a lot more things, and we're able to keep adding more things. We're working on keeping ever ything fresh, and suppor ting our local small businesses who are selling things. We like to do that with the cof fee and the lotions and the soap," said Rella Bush. The most surprising thing for her might not be surpris- ing to her steady breakfast crowd. "I was surprised that we've sold a lot of cinnamon rolls. There are so many people who sell cinnamon rolls in grocery stores and other businesses. But we just — it's amazing how many cinnamon rolls we sell." Deb Bray and Joyce Biel check out customers at a hopping one-year celebration Saturday at Mae's Market. Owner Rella Bush said she likes her business to highlight other local businesses.
