In the girls junior/senior race, Titan junior Courtney Heldt was the top Titan run- ner. She placed eighth in 21:28. Aleks Parmer was 19th in 23:42 with Keelyn Wilk- erson in 29th at 26:54 and Kennedy Ping placed 34th in 28:31. In the girls freshman/ sophomore race Elizabeth Steckler was the top Titan in seventh place in a time of 22:13, Aleah Rexing finished 13th in 23:31 and Bailey Bak- er was 16th in 24:16. Lily Spindler was 36th in 27:32. Roberts had runs of 16, 14. DeLong had a 29-yard recep- tion as well in the drive. Roberts' third touchdown was a five-yard run. It followed a Boyd-to-DeLong pass of 32 yards as the Titans made it 50-6 with a two-play 37-yard drive just before half. "Devan is really explosive. A lot of credit goes to our of- fensive line, when Devan has a chance to get into open space he is going to make big plays," said Hart. Neither team scored in the third quarter, which was lim- ited to only 16 plays due to a running clock. The fourth quarter started with a big punt return by the Titans' Waylon Finney of 27 yards to the Hatchet five-yard line. On the first play of the possession, Titan sophomore quarterback Liam Br yant ran it in and Baker Calvert added the PAT to make it 57-6. Washington got their sec- ond big play of the night on the ensuing kick-off. Rylan Memering scooped up the kick-off, found a seam and headed to the end zone 90 yards away to make it 57-13 with 8:56. The Hatchets would score again as Titan Br yant was sacked and fumbled. The fumble was picked up by Brody Isza. Isza ran it into the end zone with 2:30 left to make the final score 57-20. The Boys swept the dou- bles matches and won two of the three singles match- es. Titans John Kiesel and Noah Kiesel took down Austin Schmitt and Troy Holzmeyer 6-4, 6-4 at number one doubles. Grant Wade and Lucas Church beat North Posey's Vince Scheller and Rowan Beuligman 6-1, 6-0. Land Kiesel at number two singles won 6-2, 6-2 over North Posey's Luke Schell- er, while Eliott Church beat the Vikings' Jacob Downey 6-3, 6-3. Jake Decker fell 6-0, 6-0 to Max Renshaw. The win improves the Ti- tans to 5-5 on the season. Defending state champs square off on Friday as Titans host South Warren By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Defending state champions will square off Friday night as 3A Gibson Southern hosts 5A South Warren(KY) in football on Friday night. The Spartans from Bowl- ing Green, Kentucky were 5A state champions last year and Gibson Southern's lone loss. "They are really good. They have reloaded. They have a lot of dudes with a lot of talent," said Titan Coach Nick Hart of the Spartans. South Warren opened the season with a 49-14 win over Highlands. Quarterback Br yce Button completed 11 of 18 pases for 190 yards with two touchdowns and no inter- ceptions. South Warren led 35-0 at half- time in the easy win. Their de- fense scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, one on an interception by Preston Burns and another on a fumble recov- ery in the end zone. South Warren only ran the ball 19 times for 48 yards. In their second game they lost to Hendersonville, Ten- nessee 28-22 after jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. Hendersonville respond- ed with two touchdowns to go up 14-10, but South War- ren scored early in the third quarter to take back the lead, 16-14. Hendersonville would score two more touchdowns in the third quarter. A fourth quarter touchdown by South Warren made it 28-22. Button completed 12 of 28 for 113 yards, 1 TD and 1 in- terception against Henderson- ville. Button completed passes to seven receivers. Jimmy Sales was the Spar- tans' leading rusher with 70 yards on 13 carries Gavin Grawe added 43 yards on eight carries. Coach Hart said Christin Conyer is one of the few re- turning starters. "He is a nice one to have back," said Hart. He plays receiver and defen- sive back and is signed with Tennessee. Gibson Southern rolls into the game 3-0 with wins of 27- 20 over Terre Haute South, 45-7 over New Albany and 57- 20 over Washington. Tanner Boyd, replacing 4-Star Purdue quarterback Brady Allen, has been hot. He completed 10 of 11 passes for 232 yards and four touch- downs against Washington. For the season, Boyd has com- pleted 50 of 60 passes for 554 yards, nine touchdowns and only one interception. "He is making excellent de- cisions right now," said Coach Hart. Senior Titan tailback Devan Roberts has also established himself as an explosive threat. Roberts has run for 143 and 120 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in the last two games and 332 yards on the season. "This is the type of test we want," said Hart of South War- ren. "We will have to play a lot better on Friday if we are go- ing to win. Against a talented team as good as South War- ren, you have to play at an ex- tremely high level to win. It is up to us to do that," said Hart. Game time is 7 p.m. Friday at home. Junior Titans sweep Henderson South Gibson Jr. Titans swept Henderson on Thurs- day with a pair of wins. In the seventh grade contest, the Jr. Titans won 40-6. After the Titans gave up an early touchdown, Isaac Dill ran for a 7-yard score and added the PAT to take an 8-6 lead. The scores came quickly after that. Tucker Deputy ran in from 15 yards and Dill added the PAT. Dill added two more scores, a 3-yard touchdown and a late pick six for the final score. Dill added the PAT and the defense added a safety. R.J. Smith had 6 tackles, Jaxson Kiefer had 5, and Dill had 5 tackles and interception. The 7th grade is 2-0. In the 8th grade contest, the Jr. Titans came away with a hard-fought 14-6 win. They gave up an early score, but the defense settled down and did not give up any more points. Caden Rochleau found Peyton Johnson on a 44-yard pass play for the tie, and Rochleau ran the PAT for the lead. Late in the game, on a 4th and 11, Roch- leau found Johnson again on a 37-yard pass play. Rochleau ran in from the 3 to make the score 14-6. The defense held and re- covered a fumble to seal the win. On defense, Eli Foster had 11 tackles, Peyton Johnson had 10. Khale Campbell add- ed 6 tackles. Elijah Ortiz had an interception and Foster recovered the fumble. The 8th grade improves to 2-0. Coach May was ver y happy with the two games. After falling behind in both games, the boys kept play- ing and Coach Kahle's defense stepped up. Both teams travel to Boonville next Thursday. Vernon 4-1 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys tennis team beat Mt. Vernon 4-1 on Thursday. The Titans swept the dou- bles matches without losing a game. The Kiesel brothers, John and Noah at number one doubles rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Micha Luck- ett and Jaxston Raber. The number two doubles team of Grant Wade and Lucas Church did the same thing, beating Mt. Vernon's Hunter Spalding and Masyn Dye 6-0, 6-0. In singles matches Landon Kiesel at number two sin- gles won a three-setter. After dropping the first set 6-4 he came back to win the second set 6-3 and then the third set came down to a tiebreaker that he won 7-4. Jake Decker at number one singles lost a three-set match. After losing 6-2 in the first set he rallied to win the second set by tiebreaker 7-4, then fell 6-3 in the third set to Mt. Vernon's Rayton Paul. Elliot Church at number three singles was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Khai Willard. In JV matches, Landon Schmitt beat Taylor Jar vis 6-2, Luke Stoll won 6-2 over the Wildcats' Sam Parmer and Mark Stunkel and Doug- las Hardison won 6-4 in dou- bles.
