Titans overwhelm Hatchets for 57-20 win By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern scored on their first four possessions, running up a 29-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 57-20 win over an out-manned Wash- ington team. Titan quarterback Tanner Boyd and running back Devan Roberts both had gaudy numbers on the night. Boyd completed 10 of 11 pass- es for 232 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. His 10 comple- tions were to six different receivers. Roberts, meanwhile, was slashing the Hatchet defense for 120 yards rushing and two touchdowns in just seven carries. He also had touch- downs catches on the night. Gibson Southern ran up 418 yards in only 34 plays and had the ball only 16:39 minutes compared to Wash- ington who had the ball for 25:34 minutes, ran 40 plays, but only man- aged 140 yards of offense. Seven- ty-five of that was on one play. The offensive yardage would have been much more lopsided but Gib- son Southern defense was so domi- nant, the Titan offense started their drives in great field position. Their first three drives started at the Wash- ington 42, Gibson Southern 48 and Washington 10. "I thought we executed well offen- sively, but we made enough mistakes on defense to last me a lifetime. De- fensively we played well for the first three drives. After that our attention to detail went out the window. We go from a pretty good defense to a worse-than-average defense quickly, when we do that. I was not happy with our defensive attention to de- tail after the first three possessions," said Titan Head Coach Nick Hart. Gibson Southern kicked off to Washington to start the game. Their defense wasted no time establishing itself. Washington's first three plays were minus 2, no gain and minus 2, forcing a punt. Boyd and the Titan offense took over at their 42 yard line. It took them only four plays to cover the 58 yards. Boyd hit Sean DeLong for 14 yards. Roberts ran for 11, Boyd hit Isaac O'Neal for 14 yards to the Washington three and DeLong then finished the drive with a short run. Holder Mason Scheller picked up a bad snap and found Zach Butler on a broken play for a two-point conver- sion and an 8-0 lead. Washington's second offensive series consisted of two incomplete passes and a one-yard run. DeLong returned the punt 10 yards to the Titan 48 yard-line. This time it took only two plays for the Titans to score. Roberts went 18 on first down and Boyd then threw a pass over the top to Michael Herron inside the 10 and he went into the end zone untouched. Cam Novotny converted the PAT and Gibson Southern led 15-0 with 8:18 remaining in the first period. Novotny boomed the kickoff to the seven-yard line and the Titans cov- ered it, dropping Hatchet Ryan Me- mering at the seven. Washington's next two plays were a loss of three and a loss of two. Mason Schell- er then picked off Colton Stowers' pass, giving the Titans the ball at the Washington 10. Boyd found Delong for a touch- down on the first play and Gibson Southern was up 22-0 just 5:40 min- utes into the game. Washington got their initial first down on their fourth possession of the game. They made three more first downs, driving the ball to the Gibson Southern 31. But the Titan defense stiffened. On third-and-one Gibson Southern stuffed the Hatch- ets for a four-yard loss. Then with Washington going for it on fourth down they sacked Hatchet quarter- back Jameson Dwyer to take over at their own 33. Roberts broke a 39-yard run on the first play, getting the ball to the Washington 39. Boyd found Roberts coming out of the backfield on the next play and he took it in for the first of his four touchdowns on the night with just 1:24 left in the first quarter. Washington had their first of two big plays on the night. Facing third and seven, 48 sec- onds into the second quarter, Hatch- et quarterback hit Conner Wooley for a 75-yard touchdown, making it 29-6. The PAT was blocked. Roberts would score three con- secutive touchdowns in the second quarter for the Titans. His first was on a 24-yard pass from Boyd to make it 36-6. "Those guys are playing really well. We protected them really well. Tanner is just making really good de- cisions right now. On the touchdown pass to Roberts, Washington blizted, Roberts was hot and Tanner hit him. He is just making exellent decsions right now," said Hart.. Roberts' second, a 17-yard run capped a seven-play drive covering 93 yards.
