PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the MAVERICK The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 20, 2022 D-3 and some even believe it is the responsibility of church leaders and not of laypeople. It is, in fact, the call of every Christian to preach the gospel. Paul gave the key to sharing the gospel in II Corinthians 1:12, "in simplic- ity and godly sincerity...by the grace of God." Keep it simple and be sincere. God's grace and the gospel itself will be the pow- er that effects the heart. Chad Searls, Pastor Allen Parks, Reporter TWIN OAKS CHURCH 1911 E. Co. Rd. 650 N. David Mullis, Pastor Hope Barnett, Reporter SPURGEON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 11505 N. Hwy. 61 Spurgeon Pastor Cell 812-202- 8903 or church office 812-922-8215 Church ser vice 9 a.m.; Fri- day Bible study at 1 p.m. "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13). Perhaps we could show sac- rificial love by giving time to care for the needs of an aging family member. We could put the needs of a sibling first by doing their chores during a stressful week at school. We might even take extra shifts with a sick child to allow our spouse sleep. As we sacrifi- cially love others, we demon- strate the greatest expression of love. What is one way you could demonstrate sacrificial love today? What holds you back from loving sacrificially? "Father, help me to look for ways I can love others sacrificial- ly each day"—Amen. Josh Sanders, Pastor Sherry Julian, Reporter WHITE RIVER CHAPEL UMC 3555 W. SR 56 Bowman 812-582-8896 Sunday worship 9 a.m.; Sunday school 10 :15 a.m. We are exploring the words in Philippians 4:4-9 and how they can help us thrive in chaos. So many trials come into our lives and along with the busi- ness of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). What things will be added? God's order back into our lives—a peace that passes all understanding—He is in control. Facebook: White River Chapel UMC, Jeff Pinney. Gen. 11:7; God said, "let us go down and confuse their language, that they may not understand one another." Have you ever noticed that men and women seem to be speaking two different languages? In the above scripture, the people are building a tower to heaven, not to glorify God but themselves. God stops them by confusing their speech. Just as men and women need to learn how to communicate with each other, to build a strong mar- riage, we as Christians, need to learn how to communicate with our Lord. We need to read His Word and stop asking long enough to hear the answer. Ron Vickers, Pastor Elaine Young, Reporter HOUSE OF MERCY CHURCH Corner of East and Porter Winslow Pastor 812-789-5229 A Church with open arms and a loving heart. In His Service, George Bruce, Jr., Pastor Presbyterian MAIN STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg 812-354-6844 visit us, our doors are always open to you. Office hours: 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday. Weighed down Many people dream of having the "right stuff" to fly to space. Recently, 18,300 people applied for just 12 astronaut spots at NASA! Fanfare over the moon landing's 50th anniversar y is sure to spark even more interest. Leaving behind earthly troubles and floating in zero grav- ity must be amazing, right? Not, it turns out, for one's body. Weightlessness takes a heavy physical toll in space. Without resistance, muscles waste away and bones weaken. Bodily sys- tems we take for granted are disrupted, causing disorientation. To counteract these effects, astronauts wear resistance suits while exercising. Ironically, after escaping Earth's gravity, they must replace it. Similarly, we long for trouble-free days and pray for an end to earthly burdens, not recognizing that exertion, whether phys- ical or spiritual, builds strength. "He who knows no hardships will know no hardihood," said Harr y Emerson Fosdick. "He who faces no calamity will need no courage. … The character- istics in human nature which we love best grow in a soil with a strong mixture of troubles." Amy Melhiser, Secretary Wesleyan OTWELL WESLEYAN CHURCH 2277 N. Mechanics Street Otwell Pastor 812-354-3028 Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.; morning worship at 10:30 a.m.; Sunday evening worship service at 6:30 p.m. Building a relationship with God: Several things to remember when building this relationship: • Don't make this hard, keep it simple. Think of building a rela- tionship with God just as you would a relationship with anyone else. • Take the time to touch bases with God, acknowledging and giv- ing thanks for His presence. • Invite Him to come close — to sit with you at your heart's kitchen table and just hang out. • Talk: Some days this will feel like pouring out your heart. Other days, it will be casual chit-chat. Occasionally, all you'll be able to man- age is, "Here I am, Lord. Please be with me." • Listen: Remember to make it a two-way conversation and expect to hear from God, just as you would from a trusted friend. God wants you to know how much He loves you. He wants to offer support and guidance to you. If you don't take the time to listen, you won't hear His "still, small voice." For me, this communication from God comes in any of various forms: thoughts, feelings, music, reading, nature, other people, or circumstances. • Make contact throughout your day. Being in touch with God doesn't have to be only during times of meditation or prayer. It can be while you're on the run, when you're in the midst of activities, or when you have a moment's break. Make these steps regular practices, and expect it to take time. You'll find yourself gradually learning to recognize God's voice and beginning to trust it. One day, you'll realize you're in a relationship with God that is treasured and invaluable in your life. Even with earth- ly friends, some days you feel closer to them than others. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter "What do you mean I won't grow up to be a ti- ger?" This week PAWS is featuring a rowdy young kitten named Maverick, who immediately tries to get someone's atten- tion as they enter the cat room at PAWS. He is ver y vocal and enter taining, and often acts like a full grown cat as he stalks his buddies in the cat room. Maverick has medi- um long hair with black whirls in his tiger striped fur, aqua eyes and ver y long white whiskers. You must visit with this wee ball of fur to appreciate his fun-loving personality.
