Carter named to Track Hall of Fame By Andy Heuring Editor editor@press-dispatch.net Petersburg native Richard Carter has been named to the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame. Carter was a two-time state champion in the pole vault while competing for Peters- burg High School. As a sophomore in 1949, Carter cleared 12'8.75" to win the state title. He had placed third in the regional but at the state level made a big improvement. His height of 12'8.75" was the third high- est ever cleared in Indiana at the time. In 1950 as a junior he cleared 12'3" to win back-to- back state championships. Between his two state championship vaults, Carter was injured in a serious car accident near Monroe City. While in the hospital, doctors originally advised his parents they needed to amputate his right arm to protect him from gangrene. But he pleaded with his parents and doctors to not remove his arm. They decided to tr y and save his arm. It was successful. Carter returned to his pole vaulting and won his second consecutive state title. He is one of only six people to have won the pole vault state championship more than one time. He was also a two-time All Pocket Athletic Confer- ence football player for Pe- tersburg. He joined the Army in 1951 before completing high school and gave up the op- portunity to be the first and only person to win three In- diana pole vault state cham- pionships. Carter served in the Army during the Kore- an Ward and was wounded in September 1951. He re- ceived the Purple Heart af- ter the injury. He retired from the Army and went to work for a construction company as a master welder and lived in Indianapolis. In 1959 he died in a work accident when fumes from paint thinner exploded. Carter was the son of the late Gerald and Ellone Carter. He was married to Winifred Coldiron. They have a daughter, Denesa Cook and deceased son, Gerald Richard Carter and two step-children, Ran- dy and Michael Abbey. His siblings are Monzella Stout, Vonda Crabtree and Eugene (Bugsy) Phillips. Petersburg native Richard Carter has been named to the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame.
