Poplar Street, Petersburg The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 13, 2022 B-1 Bohnert's summer internship pointing her toward a career in golf By Andy Heuring Editor editor@pressdispatch.net Pike Central graduate Na- talie Bohnert was probably the best swimmer and one of the best golfers to ever go through Pike Central. She holds ------- school records in swimming and is tied for the school record for lowest round in golf. She is a rare dual sport ath- lete in college at South West Minnesota, a school she chose because they wanted her to play both sports. This summer she is be- tween her sophomore and ju- nior years at SW Minnesota. She is immersing herself not in the pool, but in golf, more specifically youth golf. She is doing an internship with the Indiana Golf Associ- ation. "I used to play in it (IGA). They kept emailing me and they reached out about the in- ternship. So I applied and got the job," said Bohnert. So far this summer she helps run youth golf tour- naments around the state of Indiana. A couple of weeks ago she was in West Lafay- ette helping with the Indiana Junior Boys state champion- ships being played at Purdue University's courses. Last week she was in French Lick at the -------. She said she helps get set up and then is on the course answering questions for par- ents and helping the players with rulings. When she isn't at tourna- ments, she is promoting ju- nior golf at various sites and events. "Just tr ying to keep the kids excited about what they are doing. Tr ying to get them involved in the game of golf as much as possible," said Bohnert. She has been all over Indi- ana from Goshen to the Lou- isville area, and points in be- tween. "I love it," said Bohner t of her travels and work. So much so she now thinks the golf industr y may be her future. "I never saw myself doing something in golf, but here we are." While at SW Minnesota she is majoring in elementar y edu- cation. "I hope to go back and get a masters in sports leader- ship." It is an area she is look- ing at for her future. "I want to stick around the game of golf. I want to hope- fully hang around the younger ones." She said she now thinks she wants to be involved in the promotion of golf by helping make opportunities for kids in southern Indiana more acces- sible. "Honestly, I don't know (ex- actly what that will be). I'm interested in maybe starting something around southern Indiana." She said she isn't sure what that will look like, but "a lot of kids wish they had more opportunities. I'm inter- ested to see if I can do some- thing with that." "I know I want to do some- thing with golf with the young- er players." She said it combines work- ing with youth and staying around the game. Her sum- mer internship is helping her get a better understanding of what that future might be. "It has been a fun one al- ready," said Bohnert.
