SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, July 11 and 15, 1947 Miners back on Job; Coal to Cost More: Nearly all soft coal miners are returning to the mines in the Tri-State area, and a higher price on coal was generally predicted by retailers here yesterday. One Evansville retailer said cost of coal probably will in- crease from 75 cents to $1 a ton. He added that an applica- tion for increased freight rates recently filed, by railroads with the Interstate Commerce Commission also may cause a boost in price. Independent mines have continued to op- erate while mines operated by United Mine Workers mem- bers have been idle. Want Women in Regular Armed Forces: There was a serious study of Gen. Dewight D. Eisenhower, Army chief of staff, and Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, Navy chief of opera- tions, was made as they both urged the Senate Armed Ser- vice Committee to make the WAC and WAVES permanent units of the armed forces. Marriages: Willa Vee Park- er and Donald Snyder were married on Sunday after- noon, at Monroe City, Meth- odist Church, by Rev. Parker, grandfather of the bride; Hel- en Briteweaver and Alvin D. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dis- patch Thursday, July 12, 1962 Karen Davis is working hard in an effort to repeat as the exhibitor of the Grand Champion Barrow at the 1962 Fat Barrow Show. Kar- en exhibited the 1961 Grand Champion which was sold to Citizens State Bank at $1.15 per pound. He spoke on the problems of small businesses and he said one big problem is that we are failing to meet competition of big market. Electric Energy-Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, a new Public Ser vice Indiana mobile exhibit that tells the stor y of electric energy with a sight and sound journey through time will open in Petersburg. Visitors will hear an original recording played on an Edison gramophone, a sampling of early radio and see examples of early lighting and house- hold appliances in the exhibit area devoted to yester year. This specially designed and constructed 36-foot mobile unit is on a tour of 25 cities in the utility's ser vice territor y this year. They have 1,400 acres of land to hunt on, an area to train their bird dogs and even a trap shoot area. What they don't have is air con- ditioning. About June 18 or June 19, thieves went to the clubhouse locate of f CR 700E and stole the William- son Central Air unit which was outside the building. The thieves then retur ned to the area on June 20, broke out a window, entered the building and stole the Wil- liamson Heat Exchange unit which went with the air con- ditioning unit. The congregation of the Ar- thur General Baptist Church will celebrate the church's 75th anniversar y on Sunday July 20. Nine charter mem- bers formed the church in 1922. The church was built in 1925.
