— who tr uly love God and are "the called according to His purpose," all things do indeed "work together for good" — caused by God, of course, to "work together for good." This is why God's Word to the Christian is: "Be careful [care full] for nothing; but in ever ything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your re- quests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understand- ing, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Je- sus" (Phil. 4:6,7). The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 13, 2022 D-3 blessings in your week and be filled with joy. In His Service, George Bruce, Jr., Pastor Presbyterian MAIN STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg 812-354-6844 visit us, our doors are al- ways open to you. Office hours: 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday. What is Real Fifty years ago this summer, as the Woodstock Festival in upstate New York became a symbol of the countercultural movement, another groundswell was occurring: the Jesus Movement. In 1970, teenager Greg Laurie was baptized after a bunch of "Jesus freaks" introduced him to the Savior. The lost kid whose mom had been divorced seven times finally felt part of a family. Laurie, now pastor of a megachurch and author of Jesus Revolution (Baker Books), says the Millennial generation is ripe for another major faith movement. During a time of division and unrest that mirrors the late '60s, people are longing for what's "real" and relational, he writes. Our "weary, chaotic, selfie-saturated culture" needs "a big, ravishing, transcendent, and transformational vision of who God really is," adds Laurie. "That's what happened fifty years ago. It can happen again today." Amy Melhiser, Secretary Wesleyan OTWELL WESLEYAN CHURCH 2277 N. Mechanics Street Otwell Pastor 812-354-3028 Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.; morning worship at 10:30 a.m.; Sunday evening worship ser vice at 6:30 p.m. The Pope, Billy Graham and Oral Roberts The Pope, Billy Graham, and Oral Roberts were in a plane crash over the Atlan- tic Ocean. Tragically they all died and went to the pearly gates together. St. Peter was surprised to see them. "Oh, dear. We weren't expecting you and your quarters aren't ready yet. We can't take you in and we can't send you back." Getting an idea, he picked up the celestial phone and called Lucifer. "I have three gentle- men who are ours, but their places aren't ready yet. Could you put them up for a couple of days?" The Devil reluctant- ly agreed. Two days later, St. Peter got a call. "Pete, this is Lucifer. You have to come get these three guys that are yours. This Pope guy is for- giving ever ybody, the Gra- ham fellow is saving ever y- body, and Oral Roberts has raised enough money to buy air conditioning." "And he commanded us to preach to the people and to tes- tify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead" (Acts 10:42). Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the FRANKLIN True love is a hop, skip and a dog shelter away. This week PAWS fea- tures a happy young puppy named Franklin, who can often be seen diving in the puppy pool at PAWS, then racing around the dog yard with glee, as if the cold wa - ter has given him a burst of energy. Franklin has an exu- berant personality, ap- pears to have some Cor- gi and Ter rier heritage, weighs approximately 20 pounds, will be a medi- um sized dog, is tan and white with a white tipped tail and does well with other dogs and loves children. To adopt Franklin call 812-354-9894. got home I had to change clothes twice because they were soaked with persper- ation. It has been several years since I have had my clothing that wet from the heat. I do my best to cool of f outside and tr y to stay away from the AC until I just can't handle it any lon- ger. It is dangerous to work in the heat if you don't take your time with your project. Even then it can slip up on you so make sure someone knows what you are doing and where you will be so you can be checked up on. Most people never got the oppor tunity to work in the heat with John Clinard. John was a guy who could handle the heat better than anyone I know. He is probably not able to take as much now because as we get older our bodies do change. My friend felt like play- ing music with me at Amber Manor last Tuesday eve- ning. It made him tired but his singing still sounded pretty decent. It was good to be able to play like we used to and have people to have a moment or two of enjoy- ment. Of course we have had almost a week of excessive heat and our AC was having trouble even tr ying to keep up. Ours seemed as though it was always at least a degree or two behind. I will of fer a tip for you, which I need to pay attention to and that is keep your air fillter changed because this allows for more air flow. I was getting some of my mess cleaned up when the rains came. It rained so hard it was impossible to do any- thing except watch the rain. I can do without the wind though. It usually makes a mess, Well I have rambled now for a couple of pages so I had bet- ter allow your eyes and ears rest. Please don't forget to be a blessing to someone this week. MIND Continued from page 1 Spurlin Dekel celebrated his 100th bir thday last week. A WWII veteran and silver star holder, while holding back tears, said "The things we did and the things we fought for and the boys that died for it, it's all gone down the drain." He fur ther states, "We haven't got the countr y we had when I was raised, not at all." He says "Nobody will have the fun I had. No- body will have the oppor tuni- ty I had. It's just not the same and that's not what our boys, that's not what they died for." His most pointed obser va- tion is "People don't realize what they have." Amen! What do we have in Ameri- ca? What are you thankful for? I could go into a diatribe about everything that's wrong with America. But then again, is there a utopian country in the world we could move to? Why do millions of citizens south of our border risk their lives to enter America, most illegally? America's torch of freedom may be faint, yet people from all over the world still want to come here. I suggest US citizens who hate America move to North Korea and live in the Hermit countr y. There they can ex- perience a worker's paradise. Leader for life, Kim Jong Un tolerates little foreign influ- ence. North Korea keeps you safe from ever ything bad. It is a capital offense to dis- tribute South Korean media, including music and movies. Sources report that North Korea was to execute a man by firing squad for smuggling and selling Netflix's hit show "Squid Game." They executed seven people for smuggling or possessing K-Pop videos. The state regulates every- thing in North Korea, includ- ing 28 approved hair styles. No self-expression permitted here. Everyone looks the same. Many left-wing haters of America, when asked what government they want, de- scribe something akin to socialism or communism. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are great proponents of socialism in America. Socialism will solve all our problems. It is difficult to watch and listen to Sanders because he reminds me of an angr y old man. The lesson we can learn from the former Soviet Union and its Mar xist-Leninist so- cialism is death awaits all who resist. Socialism is the antithe- sis of what our declaration of Independence proclaims as our unalienable rights given to us by God, which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of hap- piness. Socialism rejects god. The state becomes god. Your only reason for living is for the state. If the state says 1+1=5, then that is truth. The state tells you what the truth is. There is a chilling "Twilight Zone" epi- sode I suggest you watch called "The Obsolete Man." The epi- sode accurately portrays what fate awaits people who don't conform to the state. Ilhan Omar immigrated to the US from Somali. She fled from a countr y rife with civil war, poverty, human traffick- ing, governmental oppression of dissidents, food shortages, and more miser y. She found a haven in Minnesota and be- came a US citizen and a con- gressional representative. Is she thankful to be an American free from the harsh life of Somalia? She spends much of her time inciting people to tear down the countr y that wel- comed her with open arms. She's a firebrand of hate speech. I suggest she return to Somalia for a refresher course on what it is to be thankful. Americans' intent on burn- ing it down should consider the words of the apostle Paul 2Co 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Dekel is right. "People don't realize what they have." State Road 356, Petersburg • 812-677-0105 Pastor Shane Springer Jesus asked "what good will it do you, if you gain the whole world but lose your soul?" Yet, we are surrounded by a world that is constantly telling us that we need more and we need it now. There is never enough and no ma er what we do, our pursuit of things in this world ends in death. It is no wonder that every day we are reminded by the world that people are angry. Two thousand years ago Jesus Christ proved that he was the true King by loving everyone uncondi onally and giving up his life for people who didn't deserve it- including you and me. There has never been another leader like Jesus; No wars and no poli cs, just love and compassion. How many of the world's problems would start to vanish if we just loved each other? Jesus said "Come unto me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." Jesus gives us hope in a hopeless world. Alford United Methodist Church is a small country church and has been around for over a hundred years. We are located three miles east of Petersburg on State Road 356. Please come out and celebrate Jesus Christ with us. We would love to have you. All are welcome.
