Poplar Street, Petersburg LOCAL The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 6, 2022 A-3 Adult crafts a hit at library By Sherri Sebella News Editor sherri@pressdispatch.net Who doesn't like doing crafts for free? The Pike Coun- ty Librar y offers free supplies and companionship monthly for both children and adults to draw out their creative side, with the help of Rhea Turner, Pike County Public Librar y (PCPL) Teen/Adult Ser vices Coordinator and Librar y As- sistant. Each month a different craft is planned for both children and adults by Turner, who offers "Carr y-Out Creations," at both the Petersburg and Winslow locations, where you can take home an interactive craft to create with the family. Videos on how to make the carr y-out craft creations are posted to the PCPL YouTube Channel. "Art Hour" is also offered at both locations monthly. Here you can pick up a brush or sketch pencil for the first time or rediscover your talents, with the help of Turner. "Between Craft," is a fun craft planned by Turner each month at the Petersburg branch, for ages 10-13 years old. A bit hit at the librar y is the "Adult Craft." Here you join Turner at the Petersburg or Winslow location monthly for a fun-filled craft project. All materials are provided and are also available for pick-up, where you can view the "how to" video on the PCPL You- Tube Channel also. Pike County receives Broadband Ready designation The Indiana Broadband Office has designated Pike County as an official Broad- band Ready Community. The Broadband Ready Communi- ties Program aims to encour- age broadband development throughout the Hoosier State. Lieutenant Governor Su- zanne Crouch said, "Pike County joins a long list of cer- tified Broadband Ready Com- munities. Congratulations to Pike County leaders for investing in your community and residents." The certification sends a signal to the telecommuni- cation industr y that a com- munity is working to reduce barriers to broadband infra- structure investment. "Being designated as a broadband ready communi- ty validates the work of the Pike County Broadband as," said Mark Flint, president of the Pike County Commis- sioners. "Pike County has more than $12 million of broadband in- frastructure being deployed throughout the county. It's critical for Pike County's res- idents and businesses to have quality broadband and this is a great step to have the county fully covered with high-speed broadband." The certification was ap- proved following the Pike County Commissioners adop- tion of a Broadband Ready Community ordinance. Fireworks set Glezen garage on fire By Andy Heuring Editor editor@pressdispatch.net A Glezen garage caught fire on Friday when sparks from fireworks apparently fell into fireworks that were in the garage. Patoka Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Shelton said Friday at about 9:52 p.m. central dispatch received a call from the Mike Willis residence at 1375 W. Glezen Poplar St. who reported their garage on fire. Shelton said by the time the fire department arrived on scene there was just light smoke. He said the home- owner was able to use a hose to extinguish the fire that ignited roof foam board in- sulation Patoka and Petersburg fire departments responded and used a fan to clear the smoke and then used a ther- mal imaging camera to see if the fire had spread any- where else. Shelton said the Willis' were setting off fireworks outside and had other fire- works they were storing in the garage and apparently embers from the fireworks being set off ignited the fire- works in the garage.
