B-4 Sports Tuesday, May 24, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Titans edge Barr Reeve, 5-4 By Mike Sandifar South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern used three runs in the bottom half of the third inning, then came back with a pair of runs in the bot- tom of the fifth frame to take a come-from-behind victory over visiting Barr Reeve re- cently in a non-conference baseball encounter at Gibson Southern. The Vikings scored single runs in the top of the first, second, and third innings to take a 3-0 advantage over the Titans, but Gibson Southern knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third. Senior Kaden Hurless was the first hitter to take the bat- ter's box in the bottom of the third inning for Gibson South- ern, and the Titan shortstop singled to open the inning. Senior Logan Maurer was the next hitter for Gibson Southern, and though Maur- er hit the baseball, it was field- ed by the Viking third sacker, who tossed the ball to first for an out. That brought senior Colton Okes to the plate, with Hurless on first and one out. Okes answered the call by hitting the baseball out of the park for a home run to tie the score at 3-3. Neither team could push a run across home plate in the fourth inning, and the Titans held the Vikings without a run in the top of the fifth inning to keep the scored at 3-3 going in- to the bottom half of the fifth. The eventual winners plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run shot by se- nior Levi Dickerson to give the eventual winners a two-run ad- vantage heading into the sixth inning. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but in the top of the seventh, Barr Reeve pushed a run across the plate to get within a run of the Ti- tans before the Gibson South- ern defense shut down the Vi- kings without further dam- age to claim the 5 -4 non-con- ference clash. Gibson Southern had nine hits in the contest, with the senior quartet of Kaden Hur- less, Oliver Hamilton, Levi Dickerson, and Colton Okes all banging out a pair of hits. Classmate Drew Foster had the other Titan hit to account for all nine hits by the winners. Dickerson and Okes each hit home runs for the hosts, while junior Bradyn Epperson and seniors Logan Thomas, Logan Maurer, Regan Farm- er, all worked Viking pitching for a walk. Okes started on the mound for the Titans and got the win, going six and a third innings against the Vikings and al- lowed just three hits. Okes struck out a dozen Barr Reeve batters and walked just one in the win. Senior Justin Stimpson took the hill over the final two- thirds of the top of the seventh inning. He did not allow a run to close out the 5 -4 victory for the hosts. The win put Gibson South- ern at 14-5 on the 2022 Dia- mond Campaign, including 6 - 4 in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference (PAC). Evansville Memorial no match for Titans' win-streak By Mike Sandifar South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern High School Baseball Team has played six Evansville schools this season, and the Titans have beaten all six of those schools. The latest victim was Evansville Memorial last Mon- day afternoon at Bosse Field in Evansville, when Gibson Southern came away with an 8 -0 victory to leave no doubt as to which team was the best. The only Evansville schools the Titans have not played this year are Evansville Mater Dei and Evansville Bosse, and Mater Dei was slated to tan- gle with the Titans last Satur- day in the Mt. Vernon "Round Robin". Bosse was not on the Gibson Southern docket this spring. Evansville Christian is an independent, while the oth- er five schools that have been on the Titan schedule are in the Southern Indiana Athlet- ic Conference (SIAC), con- sidered to be the best high school conference south of Indianapolis—and to date, GSHS stands at 5 -0 against SIAC schools. Last Monday against Evans- ville Memorial, the Titans scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a quick 1- 0 advantage over the host Ti- gers. Senior Colton Okes held Memorial without a run in the bottom half of the first frame, and neither team scored in the second or third innings. The Titans jumped on the Tigers for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to push the lead to 6 -0. The hosts did not score in the bottom of the fourth in- ning, and neither team could plate a run in the fifth inning to keep the score at 6 -0, in fa- vor of the Titans. Gibson Southern had two more runs cross the plate in the top of the sixth inning to up their lead, 8 -0. The Titans did not score in the top of the seventh inning, and the Tigers could not mus- ter a run in the bottom of the seventh frame to give Gibson Southern the 8 -0 road victory. Senior Kaden Hurless led the Titans with three hits in five at bats, while seniors Drew Foster, Logan Maurer, Oliver Hamilton, Levi Dicker- son, Okes, and freshman Seth Parsons all had one hit. Fos- ter and Hamilton each had a double. Senior Brayden Malone worked Tiger pitchers for three walks, while Maurer and Okes each had a free pass to first base. Okes started on the mound for the winners, and he pitched five and one-third in- nings. He struck out eight Ti- gers and walked four in his time on the hill. Malone and senior No- ah Bryant relieved for Okes. Malone pitched one inning and Bryant two-thirds of an inning to finish the encounter. The Titans committed two errors, while the Tigers kicked the ball six times. The win put Gibson South- ern at 18 -8 on the 2022 dia- mond campaign, including a 7- 4 Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) record, good for second place in the league. Then, of course, there is the 5 -0 SIAC mark for the Titans. Gibson Southern was right back in action on Tuesday eve- ning. They were slated to host PAC opponent Washington at Gibson Southern, then trav- el to Mt. Vernon on Saturday to take part in the Mt. Vernon Round Robin. Titan Baseball defeat Hatchets 10-1 By Mike Sandifar South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com It was Senior Day for Gib- son Southern last Tuesday af- ternoon, and the host Titans made the most of it by slam- ming visiting Washington 10 - 1 in a Pocket Athletic Confer- ence (PAC) baseball encoun- ter that saw 13 Titans play in their last home game in a Gibson Southern baseball uni- form. Logan Thomas, Drew Fos- ter, Brayden Malone, Lo- gan Maurer, Regan Farmer, Kaden Hurless, Noah Bry- ant, Mason Yancey, Justin Stimpson, Oliver Hamilton, Levi Dickerson, Colton Okes, and Ryan Holzmeyer all saw home-game action for the last time in their high school ca- reers. The visiting Hatchets drew first blood in the fray, when the first Washington hitter to bat in the top of the first in- ning reached first base via an error, and after Gibson South- ern pitcher Justin Stimpson struck out the next Hatchet, the next two hitters tagged the senior hurler for back-to- back singles to score Wash- ington's only run of the bat- tle, taking a 1-0 lead. Stimpson then struck out the next two Hatchets to give the eventual winning pitcher three "Ks" for the top half of the inning. Washington pitcher Matt Hinkle faced just seven Titans in the first two innings, and the visitors held a slim 1-0 ad- vantage over the hosts. The Titans exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6 -1 lead after three innings of baseball. Stimpson continued to dom- inate the Hatchets over his fi- nal two frames on the pitch- ing mound, allowing just one hit, after the two singles in the first inning, over the final four innings he pitched. Stimpson left the game af- ter pitching the fifth inning, with Gibson Southern holding a solid 6 -1 lead. Titan Coach Chris May sent senior Logan Maurer to the mound to mop up in the sixth and seventh innings. Maurer allowed just one hit and gave up only one walk. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the hosts pounded Washington for another four runs to take a 10 -1 advantage over the visitors. When Maurer put the Hatchets down one, two, three in the top of the seventh in- ning, the game ended 10 -1. Stimpson struck out six Hatchets in his five innings of work, walking just two Wash- ington batters and giving up one unearned run. Both teams committed two errors. Maurer not only tossed the final two innings in relief on the pitching mound, he led the Titans at the plate with three hits in three at bats and scored two runs. Okes poked out a pair of sin- gles in two official at bats and like Maurer, he scored two runs. Malone, Hamilton, Dick- erson, Foster, and Farmer all had one hit in the outing. Dickerson's hit was a three- run blast over the fence for a home run that hit a building several feet from the fence, while Foster's hit was a two- run double. Hurless, Okes, Hamilton, and Yancey all drew walks from the Washington pitch- ers, while Maurer, Dickerson, and Okes each made it to first base when they were hit by a Hatchet pitch. The win put Gibson South- ern at 18 -5 overall on the 2022 baseball campaign, including an 8 -4 PAC mark that put the Titans in second place in con- ference play. Gibson Southern was scheduled to play a non-con- ference contest in Vincennes for a game with Vincennes Lincoln on Thursday, then complete the season in a round-robin competition at Mt. Vernon on Saturday. Gibson Southern senior Brayden Malone (11) rounds third and heads for home, as Titan Baseball Coach Chris May yells, "Go, Go, Go". Malone scored to give Gibson Southern a 7-1 advantage in last Tuesday's 10-1 Pock- et Athletic Conference triumph over Washington. The victory gave GSHS an 18-5 overall record, including an 8-4 PAC mark. Gibson Southern senior hurler Justin Stimpson (21) fires a fast ball in last Tuesday's 10-1 PAC win over visiting Washington. The vic- tory was the 18th of the season for the Titans against just five losses. Stimpson pitched the first five in- nings, allowed only one run. He struck out six hatchets. Levi Dickerson (24) watches the baseball he just hit out of the park in last Tuesday's 10-1 victory over visiting Washington in Pocket Athletic Conference baseball action. Dickerson's poke hit the building several feet outside the Titan baseball field. Senior Oliver Hamilton (23) pokes a single to left field in last Tuesday's 10-1 PAC victory over visiting Wash- ington at Gibson Southern. Oliver's single was one of 11 hits by the Titans on Senior Day.
