ANNUAL EASTER EASTER Made possible by community donations Patty Tegmeyer, of Petersburg, always looks forward to all that the library has to offer. "The library is my neighbor, as well as my friend," Tegmeyer said. "Rhea (Turner) always helps me pick out new books to read and I always look forward to her classes." "I'm here every time she (Rhea) has something going on," Kay Williams, another participant of Turner's craft class said. Pictured left to right, Rhea Turner, Pike County Library Clerk, along with class participants, Kay Williams, and Patty Tegmeyer, show off their decoupage wine bottles. Turner, who plans and teaches the classes, is ex- cited about the programs beginning again. "This is our first time back," Turner said. Turner taught an adult class at the Petersburg Branch last week, where participants learned how to do decoupage on donated, deco- rative bottles. DECOUPAGE 101 Pike County Libraries start craft classes again By Sherri Sebella If you love crafts and making new friends, Pike County Libraries has be- gun their youth and adult crafts classes again thanks to lower COVID numbers throughout the county. Rhea Turner, Pike County Library Clerk, who plans and teaches the classes is excited about the programs beginning again. "This is our first time back," Turn- er said. "We did virtual classes, where you could pick up the materials and watch a video at home to do them, due to high COVID numbers, but now we're back and hoping to continue them." There are different classes each month for both youth and adults. Last week Turner taught adults how to decoupage on wine bottles and add decorative fairy lights to the bottles, to create a beautiful ambiance to the finished craft. With scissors, Mod Podge glue and decorative napkins in hand, Turner taught those in attendance all the secrets of making the perfect decorative bottles to take home. "A woman years ago went to a winery and asked them for empty bottles for donations," Turner said. "We had all these empty wine bottles to do something with, so I thought this would be a fun craft to teach." In April, Turner will teach a class at the Winslow Public Library from 4:30 - 6 p.m., on Tuesday, April 19, and Peters- burg Public Library from 10 a.m. until noon on Thursday, April 21. What type of craft for the month of April will be de- termined. Check the Pike County Face- book page for updates. Some crafts Turner has done in the past include wood signs, pillows, draw- ing and more. Over the next few months, Turner looks forward to teaching milk painting on Mason jars, more wood signs, and she is organizing a "Tiny Art Show," with 4"x4" inch canvases that will be showcased at the libraries. Patty Tegmeyer, of Petersburg, always looks forward to all that the library has to offer. "The library is my neighbor, as well as my friend," Tegmeyer said. "Rhea al- ways helps me pick out new books to read and I always look forward to her class- es." "I'm here every time she (Rhea) has something going on," Kay Williams, an- other participant of Turner's craft class said. Turner also has a passion for drawing and teaching children how to paint or pencil sketch. "We just started Art Hour, once a month for 12-13 year-olds, to teach them how to do cartoon drawing or An- ime," Turner said, which is hand-drawn and computer animation originating from Japan. This program takes place on the first Tuesday of each month, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. at the Petersburg branch. Another program the library offers in- cludes LEGO Duplo, at both the Peters- burg and Winslow branch, where tod- dler's can boost their skill sets. There is also a "Between Craft," program at the Petersburg Branch, which is for ag- es 10 -13. All materials are provided and the next class will take place on Thurs- day, April 14, from 3:30 -5 p.m. There will be a book signing taking place on Thursday, April 7, from 4-6 p.m. with author Ellen Jones, who wrote 'En- glishman on the Prairie.' This is a fiction- al book based partially on real life ances- tral characters. It tells the story of Jones' great-great-grandfather coming from En- gland to America and settling on the Il- linois Prairie.
