Poplar Street, Petersburg While it is nice to have friends in high plac- es, God's people have foes in high places! "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Eph. 6:12). The Greek word for "high" here is epoura- nios, elsewhere translated "heavenly," "celes- tial," and "in heaven." Only here is it translat- ed "high places," a phrase that is elsewhere al- ways found in the Old Testament, where it was associated with the worship of the false god Baal (Num. 22:41; Jer. 19:5; 32:35) and idola- try (II Chron. 14:3). That's why it angered God when Israel allowed these high places to exist in their midst (Psa. 78:58), and why He was pleased when they were removed (II Kings 18:1-4) and displeased when they were not (II Kings 12:3;14:4; 15:4,35). But here's the kicker. As strange as it may sound, Jehovah was often worshiped in these high places in the worship of idols (II Kings 17:32; II Chron. 33:17)! If that sounds familiar, it is because fusing the worship of God with idolatry is a device Satan used for centuries during the Dark Ages in the church of Rome The church page is made possible by the following firms and businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Points to Ponder By Curtis Bond See MINUTES on page 3 See POINTS on page 3 Foes in high places Minutes with the Bible By Pastor Ricky Kurth Hi, it is time to write this column and as I sit here I have no idea what will be written. It is really just what comes to my mind. I gave a praise today that it feels good to feel good no matter how long it lasts. As I grow older I see more and more of my friends hav- ing difficulties and getting sick with diseas- es, which come along with our elder years, but what has that to do with us. . . HMMMM? I am starting to realize what people say about age just being a number and not allowing yourself the chance to think yourself into being even sicker. My wife had to go back to check her sur- gery and everything was looking as it should. She felt pretty good about getting a good re- port from them, although she has to go back in a couple of weeks to get all the stitches tak- en out. She goes Tuesday to another dentist to have a crown delivered so once she gets this done her mouth should be in decent shape, but I'm not so sure about our bank account. With all the rain we had it was a good day to watch T V. The confirmation hearings for Judge Jackson to the Supreme Court were on. Some questions they were asking needed to be asked because our Supreme Court has a lot to say with their interpretation of our laws. I have a daughter who lives several states away. We talk regularly on the phone. Being a pastor and concerned parent and grandpar- ent, I always ask her how church is going. Nat- urally, I want her family to be attending church and my grandchildren receiving good, whole- some Christian teaching. She is prejudiced toward her father and of- ten says, "no other pastor is as good as you, Daddy." My reply is usually I appreciate the accolades, but Dad doesn't pastor where you live, so where are you attending church? She paused at my question and said lately they ha- ven't been going to church. As I pressed the question, why not? Her answer is enlightening. Church has changed since I was a kid. I grew up in the "baby-boomer" church. Nearly ev- ery kid I knew in school went to church. We filled churches to the rim. In most cities and towns, people had a wide variety of churches to choose from. My mom dragged us to church every Sunday despite our protests. Likewise, when my turn came, I dragged my kids to church every Sunday. Their protests fell on deaf ears. They grew up in church. As parents, we tried to be a good exam- ple for our children. Something changed be- tween when I was a kid going to church and my grandchildren going to church. In the past thirty plus years, many church- es have closed, as have local schools. Church- es that once were full now set empty. Some churches fell victim to the changing job mar- ket. People moved away in search of employ- ment and populations decreased. A good num- ber of churches closed due to lack of some- thing. The church I attended growing up closed years ago, as did many others in town. Yet there are new churches sprouting up and old ones closing. What gives? Assembly of God RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105 NLT). This is probably one of the first verses we, as children, we taught to memorize at Sun- day school or Bible school. All through our lives, we have sit- uations that cause fear of the unknown to make us feel un- easy and afraid. We can view these situations as opportuni- ties to show how God lights our path and his word guides us. Stepping through the un- known takes courage and sometimes, it isn't available. "Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the first fruits of all your increase" (Proverbs 3:9). God doesn't "need" our money to get His work done.
