Open Late Evenings Walk-In (Hours vary) or by appointment Enthusiastic team ready for 2022 season By Andy Heuring Pike Central boys golf team is in the second year of a re- building phase after having only one golfer with any var- sity experience last year. Hunter Traylor, a senior, was the only player who had ever played in a varsity match. Most of the team last year had only recently picked up golf clubs. Often there were four freshmen in the six-man line- up and sometimes five. But what they lacked in experi- ence they tried to make up for with enthusiasm. "Man, I really like us this year. Those guys have put in an incredible amount of time. They have been out there this winter. If there was day decent enough to play, they were play- ing," said Charger Coach Jar- rod Gideon. They were so young last year, Gideon said it caused lo- gistic problems because only one team member had a driv- er's license. "It was a strug- gle just trying to get rides to practice for all of them," said Gideon. The young players' enthusi- asm for golf surprised Gideon. He said last year they played an 18 -hole tournament in the morning, then when they re- turned, all of the guys showed up in the afternoon at Prides Creek and played at least an- other 18. A group of them played most days and also on Friday nights during the sum- mer. Pike Central returns at least six who played varsity at one time or the other. All team members from last year are back: Arri McDonald, Tyler Craig, Cobey McKinney, Nathan Snyder and Nolan Nel- son. Arri McDonald returns as one of the most consis- tent players from last year. "I don't know if I have ev- er seen anyone put in as much time as Arri has," said Gideon. "He is a kid who might hit a hun- dred wedges in a practice," said Gideon. Tyler Craig has been out here playing a lot and Cobey McKinney has been playing and getting better. Gideon said he knows their scores have been improving, but added,"Playing in compe- tition is always harder than when you are playing with your buddies," said Gideon. "These guys have played a ton of golf since last season. So telling how good we will be is hard, but I think we will be improved with the time they have put in," said Gideon. The team has two juniors. Nolan Nelson is a junior who played a lot of varsity last year. The golf team also picked up junior Peyton Howald. "He has played a lot of golf, just not on the team." Howald is good three-sport athlete, be- ing a starter in both football and basketball. Nathan Snyder shot in the 40s at least twice last year and was medalist in one match. "Nathan was really nervous last year. He will be more re- laxed and that will help," said Gideon. Most of the freshmen early in the season were in the high 50s and occasionally topped 60. But by mid-season they were parring those scores down to low 50s and an occa- sionally breaking 50. "Tyler (Craig) was really consistent for us last year. He plays smart and knows his way around the golf course," said Gideon. Nolan Nelson is a junior this season. He consistently shot in the mid to low 50s. "He is just a really good athlete. He will be improved this season," said Gideon. Cobey McKinney is s soph- omore who played in the sec- tional last season. "He has re- ally improved since the start of last year," said Gideon. Three-sport athlete Pey- ton Howald is playing this season. "A very positive kid to have on the team. A good teammate and a very good ath- lete. He played a lot of golf. I don't know what he can do, but I know he can hit the ball," said Gideon. Gideon said there is are ma- ny new freshmen and sopho- mores out this year for the first time, or played last year for the first time. Most are kids who need to play and get experience and will help the team in the future. They in- clude: Maddox Hunt, Bren- ton Fryrear, Max Burkhart, Xander Parker, Caden Faus- naugh, Sam Nelson, Griffin Correll, Devan Farmer and Arie O'Neal. "I'm a firm believer anyone can be a decent golfer if they work at it. They were out there every day. I don't see how they won't be much better. There are days Arri will put in eight hours on the golf course," said Gideon. "These kids were on the golf course almost everyday. I have seen summer in the past when I don't see a kid on the golf course. I'm very excited because they were out there nearly every day." "I don't know if I have ever had a team this excited about golf season started. I have kids nearly every day coming up to me in the halls, talking to me about the season start- ing," said Gideon. The 2022 Pike Central boys golf team members are front row (l to r): Nathan Snyder, Clayton Galloway, Xander Parker, Devin Farmer, Max Burkhart, Drew Dawson and Arrie O'Neal. Middle row: Caden Fausnaugh, Brenton Freyrear, Cobey McKinney, Tyler Craig and Arri McDonald. Back row: Nolan Nelson, Lucas Taylor, Peyton Howald, Sam Nelson and Griffin Correll.
