Pike County Extension Office conducts 4-H Day Camp By Sherri Sebella A fter not being able to hold the Spring 4-H Day Camp for the past two years due to COVID, the Pike County Ex- tension office was finally able to plan and hold their annu- al event for kids who are on Spring Break this week. "We had to change all of our plans at the last minute due to the weather," Brooke Goble, Extension Educator - 4-H Youth Development, said. We had a lot of activities planned for outside, but we are still going to try and get the kids outside for a bit for some of the activities. Today we are spending some time this afternoon in the barn, where the kids will partici- pate in AG Olympics." From riding pool noodles decorated as horses, to fish- ing for fish made out of pool noodles, Goble and staff were imaginative in creating a fun, safe environment for children home on Spring Break. "We're really excited to have such a good turn-out this year after not being able to hold the day camp because of COVID," Goble said. "We had 35 kids sign up and we have 4-H volunteers helping us for the camp." The kids had a vast variety of activities from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednes- day this week. "We made step- ping stones this morning and did fabric painting," Goble said. "We also are doing a va- riety of science experiments with different worksheets per age group. The kids will learn about micro-greens and will take them home today also. We will end the day with a game of dodge ball to switch things up a bit." Wednesday the Petersburg Fire Department will help the Pike County Extension Office with an egg science exper- iment for kids and they will be making catapults, playing real life Hungry, Hungry, Hip- pos with the kids as the hip- pos on scooters and they will also be doing some egg paint- ing on canvas, according to Goble. "We have the groups split up between younger kids and older kids, so they can work together with each other," Goble said. Some future events include a Performing Arts Contest at the Pike County Fairgrounds on April 16, beginning at 5 p.m. "Kids can do musi- cal acts, non-musical acts, group acts, demonstrations or speeches," Goble said. "We'll also have a cake deco- rating workshop that day, be- ginning at 1 p.m. Those inter- ested can call the Extension Office to register. Activities were planned for Tuesday and Wednesday for those students off of school on Spring Break.
