(USPS 205-620) KEEPING IT REAL: DARE Program a success in local schools By Sherri Sebella With more than 20 years under their belt offering the D.A.R.E. Program (De- fine, Assess, Respond, Evaluate) in the Pike Central School System, Jason McK- inney, D.A.R.E. Officer for the last six years, is pleased with how successful the program has been. "Watching the kids grow and learn grow about themselves and learning to stay away from things that can hurt them has been very rewarding," McK- inney said. The biggest thing is getting kids to realize we are there to help them at school and outside of school. If they need us, we can help them." The D.A.R.E. Program covers every- thing from decision making, defining problems, risky situations, safe and re- sponsible choices, bullying, and more. "We also hit on Internet safety every time," McKinney said. "We teach them that the people they're talking to on the Internet may not be who they think they are. Kids are exposed to so much more now because of Internet access at a younger age." Students begin the D.A.R.E. Program after Christmas break and the program runs for 10 weeks. "We are getting ready to start week eight. There has been test- ing going on, so we have to work around that," McKinney said. At the end of the 10 -week program, a special graduation is held in which par- ents can attend. "We also have an essay contest for each class," McKinney said. "One winner from each class wins a big stuffed lion and everyone gets certifica- tions of completion." McKinney tries to cover as much as possible during his time with students. "We try to hit more stuff on a daily ba- sis because kids have so much to deal with," McKinney said. "We were only half way through the program in 2019, when COVID hit, so we weren't able to finish, and then last year we weren't able to do the D.A.R.E. Program at all because of all the E-learning days due to COVID. This is the first year in awhile we have been able to do the whole program, so I'm excited about that. I'm still look- ing at trying to do something with the sixth graders who didn't get to partic- ipate last year. We don't have time for a full-blown program, but I hope to do something with them still. The kids love the K-9 dog." McKinney is grateful that the school corporation supports the D.A.R.E. Pro- gram the way it does. "Our superinten- dent works really well with us on this," McKinney said. "They're willing to give up time in the day for us to do this. Work- ing with the D.A.R.E. Program and then coaching the kids in sports in middle and high school, I get to spend a lot of time with the kids. There is not a better feeling in the world than watching these kids grow up and do well in the commu- nity. We try to do everything we can to help them. Most kids who participate in the D.A.R.E. Program do well." Fifth grade students at Petersburg Elementary were visited by D.A.R.E. Officer Jason McKinney and Pike County Sheriff Deputy Buck Seger with his K-9 Bleck. Each year fifth grade students participate in the D.A.R.E. Program for 10 weeks, teaching students to define the problems they may face, assess what their choices are, respond by using the facts and information they gathered, and evaluate their decisions and if they made good choices.
