Poplar Street, Petersburg How much, I wonder, do the Christian par- ents among our readers show their children their love for the Word, and for Christ, and for the souls for whom He died? For many years I worked with my father, first full-time, then part-time, as a city missionary in Paterson, N.J. All during these first years dad and I walked to work together each morn- ing — a little over a mile. Do you know how we invariably occupied ourselves on the way? By quoting Scripture passages on some particular subject. One morning we would quote as many passages as we could on the deity of Christ, another on His death or resurrection; others on His love, pow- er, grace, or other attributes and characteris- tics. Sometimes, for days or weeks on end dad would use these morning walks to ply me with questions such as: "What Scriptures would you use to deal with a blaspheming unbeliever? " or "a self-righteous person" or "one who rejects Christ on intellectual grounds? " In this way we covered "miles and miles" of Scripture, as it were, and this in addition to Scripture reading before every meal at home, and again before we retired for the night. And all this again in addition to the oral and writ- The church page is made possible by the following firms and businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Stam Once again it is time for the thoughts of a rambling mind to appear. I am getting lots bet- ter and I have taken a full round of the antibi- otic which my doctor had prescribed. I hope I don't catch anything else for awhile because it feels so good to get rid of the miseries. It wasn't a week of no doctors however, be- cause my wife had to have oral surgery last Monday and it put her down for about three days and she yet can't eat very well. I tried not to eat in front of her while she was on liquid diets and even when she was allowed to be on soft foods. We tried a veggie pizza Saturday night and she was sure glad to be able to eat it even if she did have to be so careful with it. I did my best to straighten up the house and mop the floors for her while she felt so bad. It seems as though our neighborhood has got- ten lots of sticks and limbs strewn around our yards. A fter I got the house a little cleaner I took advantage of the pretty weather to pick up about half the sticks. It always takes me about four days to clean our yard. So there is more to pick up, but if I don't get them all picked up there will be another day. If another day doesn't come, it won't matter, will it? Our grandson had his t-ball practice again last Wednesday evening and improvement is Upcoming Events White River Quartet to perform at Gentle Shepherd Church of God this Sunday The White River Quartet will be guest for Praise and Worship service at Gentle Shepherd Church of God, lo- cated at 8350 East 350 North ( just west of Oatsville on the Oatsville/Wheeling Road) in Gibson County on Sunday, March 27 at 6 p.m. (CDT). There will be food and fellow- ship following the concert. Everyone is welcome. Today we are in the greatest danger of a nu- clear war since the Cuban Missile Crisis of Oc- tober 1962, when I was a mere six years old! It cannot happen today, can it? Most people are unaware of official US nu- clear policy. It was President George W. Bush who updated U.S. strategic planning doc- uments to contain the possibility of a pre- emptive first strike use of nuclear weapons against a perceived threat. Joe Biden's reas- surance that the U.S. would not be resorting to a first strike nuclear attack against an enemy of America sounded hollow to Vladimir Putin. In a recent speech, Putin said, "U.S. stra- tegic planning documents contain the possi- bility of a so-called preemptive strike against enemy missile systems. And who is the main enemy for the U.S. and NATO? We know that too. It's Russia. In NATO documents, our coun- try is officially and directly declared the main threat to North Atlantic security." I am not a geopolitical expert, simply a writ- er with a sociological, historical, and Spirit in- spired imagination. One of my graduate stud- ies was a thesis on St. Aquinas' "Just War The- ory." A "Just War" requires a just killing. This seems contradictory, considering New Testa- ment teachings. Sadly, Christians promoting violence are be- coming commonplace. Recently, the headline for an article in a well-known Christian publication read, "Go Ahead. Pray for Putin's Demise—the impreca- tory psalms give us permission to push bold- ly against evil." The author advises Christians to pray, "Psalm 7:14–16 with Vladimir Putin in mind: Behold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies. He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made. His mischief returns Assembly of God RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there by any hurt- ful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way" (Psalm 139:24 NASB). God already knows our hearts, so there is no point in hiding it from him. But when you invite him in, you are ac- knowledging that you might need him to show you things in your heart and mind that need his love and guidance. Know that as you surrender to him, his love will cover all wrong, and he will lead you in the everlasting way. I Sing the Mighty Power of God by Isaac Watts I sing the mighty pow'r of God, that made the moun- tains rise, that spread the flow- ing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that or- dained the sun to rule the day; the moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey. I sing the goodness of the Lord, who filled the earth with food, who formed the crea- tures through the Word, and then pronounced them good. Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where'er I turn my eye, if I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky. There's not a plant or flow'r below, but makes Thy glories known, and clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne; While all that bor- rows life from Thee is ever in Thy care; And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there. "The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groan- ings which cannot be uttered" (Romans 8:26). Have you ever faced a situ- ation that was so overwhelm- ing or so confusing you didn't even know how to pray about it? Have you ever been so over- come with grief or burdened by heartache you couldn't put your emotions into words, much less pray about them? What a comfort these words should be: "The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself inter- cedes for us in accordance with God's will" (Romans 8:26 -27). Think of it: Even when we don't know how to pray, the Spirit knows our needs and He brings the deepest cries of our hearts before the throne of God. In ways we will never un- derstand this side of eternity, God the Holy Spirit pleads for us before God the Father. Turn to God in every situation even when you don't feel like it. The Spirit is interceding for you, in accordance with God's will. Jerry "Tuffy" Blackwell, Pastor Sharon Kendall, Reporter WINSLOW G.B. CHURCH 600 E. Thought for the week: "From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (Psalm 61:2). Be in prayer for the lost, the sick, our church, our country and leaders, and always each other. God's blessings on you this week.
