In the beginning of his Gospel, John tells us that Jesus was "the only begotten of the Father." At the end of his Gos- pel he tells us how, after he had died and risen again, Je- sus said to Mary Magdalene, "Go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God" ( John 20 :17). Hitherto in this Gospel the Lord had spoken often of "the Father" or of "my Father." Now, in resurrection, he adds, "...and your Father." It is the eldest Son, the first begotten speaking. By his death and resurrection many brethren have been brought into God's family, and so, in the same verse he uses this very name for them, calling them "my brethren." The Bible tells the stories of many people God used who seemed incapable or unsuit- ed for their calling—but God used them anyway. Moses is a classic example. When God called him to lead the Israel- ites out of Egypt, he balked (Exodus 3:11; 4:1) and protest- ed, "I am slow of speech and tongue." God replied, "Who gave human beings their mouth? Who makes them deaf or mute?...Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say" (4:10 -12). When Moses still protested, God provided Aaron to speak for him and as- sured him He would help then ( . 13-15). Like Moses, all of us are here for a reason—and God graciously helps us along the way. He supplies people to help us and provides what we need to live for Him. When have you felt incapa- ble or ill-equipped for a task or role you felt God calling you to fill? How did God help you?
