Holzmeyer wins Mental Attitude Award at 3A State championship By Andy Heuring SG Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern senior Ryan Holzmeyer was named winner of the Phil Eskew/Blake Ress Mental Attitude Award for football immediately following Gibson South- ern winning the 3A state championship. Holzmeyer is the son of Jason and Lee Ann Holzmey- er, of rural Fort Branch. "Very well deserving. Ryan is a great kid and very involved in our community," said Titan football Coach Nick Hart. Candidates for the award have to be nominated by both their high school principal and coach, excel in men- tal attitude, athletic ability, scholarship and leadership during their four years in high school. It also requires the athlete to score at least 1,000 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT and to be in the top 25 percent of his class. The IHSA A Executive Committee made the final se- lection. Holzmeyer, outside of football, is involved in the Beta Club, Theatre, Fifth Quarter and is the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. "Ryan is a servant leader," said Gibson Southern Prin- cipal Jon Adams about Holzmeyer's community partic- ipation. "Ryan is a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Maria Goretti Youth Group. He also regularly vol- unteers his time raking leaves for the elderly, works in the local soup kitchen, leads Middle School Night at his church, and visits local nursing homes and plays Bingo with the residents. He also works numerous fundraisers at his church and volunteers as the seventh grade boys' basketball coach at our feeder middle school." Holzmeyer also organized Gibson Southern's Veter- ans Night prior to a football game, coordinating the event between the VFW and the school. He plans to attend Marion University and major in Catholic Studies. "Ryan epitomizes what it means to be a student-ath- lete and is an individual who has used his opportunity participating in education-based athletics to make a pos- itive impact among his classmates, teammates, school and community." "It is a dream to have won," said Holzmeyer about being state champions. Minutes after the game, it was announced he was the Mental Attitude Award winner. "We have so many others who could have been nom- inated. I'm blessed and honored to have been named. It means more than football," said Holzmeyer. Lady Titans race to 60-28 win over Bosse By Mike Sandifar SG Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern raced to a 19 -0 lead to open the game and led 22-4 at the end of the first quarter over visiting Evansville Bosse in Titan Fieldhouse last Monday evening (Nov. 22), and the Lady Titans nev- er looked back to take a lop-sided 60 -28 margin in girls' high school non-conference basketball action. "Our girls did a great job of forc- ing Bosse into numerous turn- overs, while at the same time, we limited our mistakes in the game," said an excited GSHS Coach Kyle Brasher after the game. "We pushed the ball on the offensive end at every opportunity, and we had just 11 turnovers in the game. "We played all 11 of our girls, and all 11 received quality playing minutes in the game and all 11 of them scored—the second game in a row that we played all 11 and all 11 scored for us." The Lady Titans held the Lady Bulldogs to just two points in the second eight-minute stanza, while scoring another 27 points of their own to take an even larger com- manding lead at the half intermis- sion at 49 -10. The eventual winners outscored the visitors 8 -4 in the third period to take a 57-14 advantage after 24 minutes of hardwood play. Bosse did manage to put home 14 points in the final eight min- utes, while the Lady Titans tossed in just three counters to account for the final 60 -28 Gibson South- ern victory. GSHS had a pair of double-dig- it scorers in the fray, led by soph- omore Chloey Graham, a 5'7" guard, with 19 points, and followed by 5'10" junior Alexis Tucker with 10 counters. Junior Ava Weisheit, a 5'9" wing, added another eight markers to score in near double figures. Taylor Hart, a 5'9" senior, and 5'9" freshman Gabby Spink each tossed in five tallies, while 5'10" se- nior Loren Stoll connected on two of four field goal tries for anoth- er four points for the Lady Titans. Freshman Nola Ravellette, a 5'7" wing, knocked down a three- point basket for three points, fol- lowed by 5'9" senior Alex Holmes and 5'4" sophomore Ally Malone, with two points each, and 5'4" ju- nior Sydney Long and 5'10" soph- omore Abby Deal both chipping in with one point to account for all 60 of the Gibson Southern points. Weisheit grabbed nine re- bounds to lead the winners on the boards, with Tucker (six), Stoll (5), Malone (5), and Holmes (4) providing ample support in haul- ing in errant shot attempts. "We did a great job of blocking out and sharing the basketball again," pointed out Brasher in the post-game interview, "We had 17 assists in our 24 baskets, a statistic that I am very pleased with, along with the just 11 turnovers. "We also had 10 steals in the game, and we limited a very ath- letic team to just 28 points in 32 minutes. "We continue to improve in all areas of our game, and we have some great tests coming up, for which we are very excited; how- ever, that also means we have to continue to get better and be ready on both ends of the floor on every possession." The victory was the fourth con- secutive win for the Lady Titans, now 4-1 overall on the 2021-22 hardwood campaign, including a perfect 3-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC). Gibson Southern returns to ac- tion tonight in Vincennes when they take on the Vincennes Lin- coln Lady Alices at 6:30 p.m. Eighth grade boys lose by three points By Matthew Haycraft SG Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com The Fort Branch eighth grade boys' basketball team lost to Boon- ville on Monday, Nov. 22 by only three points.
