Submitted photo Places 41st at Cross Country State Finals By Matthew Haycraft On Saturday, October 30, Pike Central Charger freshman Xavery Weisman compet- ed in the girls' cross country state finals on the rain-soaked LaVern Gibson Cross Coun- try Course in Terre Haute. She is the first female and freshman to make it to the Cross Country State Finals in school history. In the state finals, she placed 41st with a time of 19:38 and was the first freshman competitor to cross the finish line. Head Coach Randy Graham said, "We are extremely proud of Xavery and her accom- plishments this season and throughout the tournament. She represented Pike Central and Pike County very well. Her finish in this meet was outstanding. Because of all the rain this past week, the course conditions slowed the runners probably about 30 seconds on av- erage, and it is a difficult course to manage under perfect conditions." "Xavery competed and really caught a lot of runners those last two miles. Finishing top 50 as a freshman was a goal and she finished 41st. Being the top freshman in the state fi- nals meet is a really nice accomplishment as well. She's got a ton of potential and if she continues to work and stay healthy, we could see her competing at this level several more times. She's got some time now to reflect on her season and to start thinking about how she can raise that bar for herself next year." Coach Graham went on to say, "We are thankful for all of the support that our boys' and girls' teams received through the region- al and semi-state weekends, and with Xavery into the state finals. It meant a lot to the kids."
